WeView: Destiny

To kick-off WeView in 2015 we will be the exploring the fate of Destiny. Despite releasing last September, Destiny still proves to be an extremely popular shooter, especially within the TSA community. Even after just a quick scroll through your Twitter feed you’ll no doubt notice a few TSA members looking for a raid partner almost every night.

Although it’s still a popular game, personally, I haven’t played Destiny for quite some time. The initial buzz of the game quickly faded away for me. Don’t get me wrong, I still think Destiny is a quality shooter. However, if you’re lacking a co-op partner to play with the game starts to feel a little lifeless and monotonous. With that being said I only scratched the surface of the game and I’ll eventually get round to diving deeper into Destiny.

Stefan reviewed Destiny, scoring it 7/10. It’s safe to say that Destiny’s story was quite poor, and this was partly due to the bland voice acting. “Peter Dinklage’s voice acting has had plenty of criticism” for his performance as Ghost, for example, but it was justified by “the delivery of his lines” for being “almost universally lacking” Tef explained. However, “there are plenty of other uninspiring and flat performances”. Overall, “a lack of clarity and understanding saps much of the sense of finality from the story’s climactic moments”.

It’s in Destiny’s online modes where you’ll get most from the game. Tef said “there’s a lot of fun to be had when playing in a fireteam of likeminded individuals, working together as a unit to take down the enemies”, later adding “this is especially true when it comes to some of the tougher battles when playing higher levelled Strike missions which will really put you to the test”. This is “something that really comes together in the Raid mode”. Here, “teamwork and communication are even more paramount as now you have puzzles to deal with and figure out, while also trying to stave off the waves of enemies and bosses”. Expect it to be “brutally difficult”.

Now it’s over to you. What did you think of Destiny? Are you still regular playing the game? Let us know in the comments below and give the game either a Buy It, Sale It, Plus It or Avoid It rating. Be sure to get your comments in by Sunday evening in time for the verdict article. We’ve also got the poll for next Tuesday’s game below

  1. Got this in my PS4 bundle on Black Friday, and I have played very little else since. Getting through strikes is great fun even with strangers and still yet to finish off the story missions. Haven’t got bored yet after almost 30 hours, but can see why some people raise repetition as an issue. But for a shooter with great gameplay I’m still more than happy replaying missions and tracking stats on the companion app. Some absolutely excellent moments had such as zooming along on the Sparrow bike, leaping off in a crowd of Fallen, gunning them all down in seconds and then zooming off again is if nothing had happened. A very polished FPS that could do with a bit more story and a rethink on DLC prices. It’s not for everyone, but Buy It.

  2. For what it lacks in Story it makes up for in mechanics. I ploughed well over 100 hours into it and enjoyed pretty much every minute of it. Yes, it has some well documented issue and yes the DLC is overpriced and underwhelming but as an online shooter you will be hard pressed to find a better all round experience. It is well worth the price of entry and is a definite buy it from me.

  3. Annoyingly repetitive, bland combat, bad voice acting across the board despite the stellar cast (likely due to a crap script and poor directing), no story. A terrible singleplayer experience, but decent with a pair of mates. It was my personal biggest disappointment of last year, but others seem to find some enjoyment in it.

If “plus it” means getting it cheaper than “sale it”, then plus it… If you have someone to play it with. Otherwise avoid it.

  4. This is one way to get your account banned.

    • …and quickly hopefully.

    • Yeah – Can’t see them lasting a long time after making generally abusive comments across most of the recent articles (& a bit in the forum).

I would challenge their opinions as they suggest (if nothing else just to see how exactly they would ‘beat me’!), but then I don’t argue with 5 year olds any other time.

    • Remember guys, don’t feed the troll!

  5. For the first 20 levels of my character I loved it.
It literally screamed HALO at me. Great gunplay, loads to explore and do, new weapons/armour made for pretty exciting stuff.

After that it went downhill fast for me.
I don’t mind a good old grindfest, FFXIII platinum and Paragon 300 on Diablo 3 (pc) is testament to that. This just got silly though. Same missions over and over with no variety, usually for little to no reward just put me off playing.

I got my warlock to level 28.5, Titan to 25ishand my hunter to about 8 before I gave up on it.

Oh and the other thing that really really misled me was the way the story was intergrated into the stupid grimoire cards. Is it really too much to ask to have the story in the bloody game??? I mean really??

    Bargain Bin it.

    • Oh and just to add, this was the main reason I got a PS4.
If they had announced a PC version I doubt I would have taken the plunge. This just made the tedium so much more grating for me.

Tempted to sell up and get a Wii U for Windwaker HD/Mario Kart instead at the moment.

  6. Did you get lost? I think you’re looking for IGN.com…

  7. It’s a buy it from me,it is repetitive at times. But playing with mates is amazing.
I have had great fun doing the raids and such with other tsa folk!

  8. I really wanted to like this game. It looks great, plays great, sounds great… but it’s a hollow, somewhat pointless experience if you’re playing solo.

So many unanswered questions… Why am I here? Why are there dozens of people walking around not speaking to one another? Why is that guy dancing dangerously on the railings? Why does nobody care that he just fell to his death? But wait, an urgent mission on planet 2 of 4… ‘Get from point A to point B as quick as you can or nothing at all will happen.’ This can only mean one thing… I need to power up a generator whilst fending off waves of enemies for no reason. But wait, all I can think about is trying to find some anti-depressants for that monotonous dwarf man from Game of Thrones, who I can only assume misunderstood his agent when they told him he was playing a ‘Ghost’, so he sucked all the life out of his performance. Well, I’m sure planet 3 will be better. Gets to planet 3. Planet 4 will be better. Gets to planet 4. Oh…

Admittedly, I did enjoy the Strikes and once I’d finished the ‘story’ missions, that’s pretty much all I played. They were fun for about a week but replaying them over and over made me loose interest and I traded the game in not long after that.

I think the main problem with Destiny is that I wanted it to be something it wasn’t. I partly blame the ridiculous amount of hype for this but also my own lofty expectations that were next to impossible to meet. Still, there are many people who did enjoy it for what it was so I guess it just wasn’t for me.

    Sale it.

  9. Repetitve, no story or story-telling, bullet-sponge enemies, same enemies respawning repeatedly in the same place, no way to view your stats unless you use a smartphone app or visit a seperate website…
But i really enjoyed it. What kept me playing it was the tasty presentation, a perfect shooting system, some nice locations and as someone who avoids online gaming, it was fun playing with mute randoms, or having a friend join me on some of the story missions.
It just has something, i can only say it was similar to the feeling, or immersion i felt while playing the Mass Effect series. That space cadet glow.
You could try the demo, if it’s anything like my experience of the beta you’ll come away with the same impression as my first paragraph.. but then an hour later you might want to play it again.. ;)
Should be cheap now too, bargain bin it!

  10. Playing Destiny is a little bit like smoking crack. One minute you are in law school, the next you are prying copper wiring off the side of your neighbours house to pay for sweet, sweet ascendant shards.

    10/10 would recommend.
