Elite: Dangerous Confirmed For PS4

Although Microsoft are trumpeting about the “debut” of Elite Dangerous on Xbox One, a post on the official Frontier forums pretty much confirms the game is a timed exclusive and will be coming to other consoles, presumably the PlayStation 4.

“Console debut in 2015 on Xbox One,” posted Frontier Community Manager Edward Lewis. “We will be able to bring it to other platforms later and we’ll talk about that when we have something to announce.”

I am sure you can all spot the carefully worded, “talk about it later” language that is used when a timed exclusive deal has been signed.

Meanwhile, David Braben has also been posting in the Frontier forums and has stated that the Xbox One version of the game will be the same as the PC build

Elite: Dangerous on Xbox One will be the complete and authentic Elite: Dangerous experience. It will not be “dumbed down”. We’ll be working with an all-new audience, but that doesn’t mean a change in direction for the game, and nor does it mean slowing development on the PC version.

  1. when they said “debut on Xbox One” it was pretty clear it was a timed exclusive.

i can wait for the PS4 version.

i just hope the console version gets rid of that always online, even in single player, shite the PC version has.
fair enough multiplayer, nature of the beast and all.
    but not single player.
i don’t want to lose access to my game when mine or their network goes down.
and it will at some point, there’s no such thing as an infallible network.

they keep that crap, and i won’t need to wait, because i won’t be buying it.

  2. Well I for one am really peeved about this timed exclusive. Being a PS4 owner I was anticipating an announcement early this year about a PS4 release, and now we see the news that PS4 release will be delayed because Microsoft have paid the developer to keep it off other platforms for an undisclosed period of time. Strong and offensive words come to mind.

    • As one of the two resident space cadets on TSA, I couldn’t agree more Amphlett.

    • Well.. Look Sony did the EXACT same thing with No Mans Sky. They paid the developer to keep it off other platforms for an undisclosed period of time.

With that in mind, it seems like a good business practice for Microsoft to buy out a game that could compete with No Mans Sky.

Doesn’t make it right, but Microsoft is hardly alone when it comes to this kind of stuff.

  3. I too look forward to this on the PS4 as I’m not an XBox man…I am 39 though and played Elite on my C64 for literally months and months…

Having poured over reviews of ED it seems to stick to the original very well but it seems THAT is it’s downfall…reviewers are saying there is nothing really to do, no narrative thus old skool gamers like myself will love it but younger ones will find it “boring”.

Thus I can see No Man’s Sky might be the preferred option for other gamers.

    I’ll be getting both! :)

  4. I can wait. PS4 has the timed exclusive on No Man’s Sky to compensate.

    • True, and I’m equally interested both these games. Is there any further news about when No Man’s Sky is going to make an appearance?

  5. So pissed off about this even if its timed. Exclusivity deals need to die. Companies need to understand throwing their wallets around like this pisses off a lot of consumers and is a shitty thing to do. That goes for sony aswell eg street fighter v

    • Yup, and it’s made doubly worse by the inevitable ambiguity around the announcements…

None of this entices me to buy an xbone though. I’ll just wait for the eventual PS4 version or go without thanks MS, so well done on that marketing fail! ;)

  6. Given how easy MS has been touting cross deployment from Windows to PC over the last few weeks, I wonder how much they moneyhatted this…. seems yet another kick to those that financed the Kickstarter and were not happy about the loss of single-player mode.
