EA Shuts Down A Number Of Free To Play Titles

EA say they have been “looking closely at the types of PC free-to-play experiences that players are engaging with across the world,” and have decided to shut down a number of their PC games.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is safe and will continue to be supported with new story-driven game updates in the future, but Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, Need for Speed World and FIFA World are all to close.

“In more than five years since most of these titles launched, how we play games has changed dramatically,” explained Executive Vice President Patrick Soderlund. “These were pioneering experiences, and we’re humbled that, over the years, so many of you joined us to enjoy the games and the community.”

The games will be live for another 90 days, after which they will go offline, but EA say they will continue to explore the free-to-play concept.

  1. i was hoping to see Dungeon Keeper on that list.

  2. But f2p is the future is it not?

And I think ‘humbled’ can be added onto the list of overused/misused PR-speak. Right next to ‘dynamic’.
