Oculus have announced that the consumer version of the VR headset will be shipping in Q1 2016, with the ability to pre-order the hardware coming later this year.
“The Rift delivers on the dream of consumer VR with compelling content, a full ecosystem, and a fully-integrated hardware/software tech stack designed specifically for virtual reality. It’s a system designed by a team of extremely passionate gamers, developers, and engineers to reimagine what gaming can be.” explain the company.
“The Oculus Rift builds on the presence, immersion, and comfort of the Crescent Bay prototype with an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as a highly refined industrial design, and updated ergonomics for a more natural fit.”
It seems that Facebook CFO, David Wehner, may have been trying to throw consumers off the scent a couple of weeks ago by saying that Oculus was still “very much in the development stage”. However, according to the blog post there will be more details about hardware, software, input and the many unannounced made-for-VR games in the coming weeks.

With any luck Sony will announce a similar release time frame for Project Morpheus, hopefully by the latest at E3.
