Fans of classic 4X games from the 90s are quite likely to have fond memories of the space-based Master of Orion series. The second game in particular, Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares, was very popular, but the series dwindled with the third game, which had poor sales and was hampered by bugs and poor AI.
It’s been over a decade since MoO III came out in 2003, and it’s high time that the series can try to reclaim some of its former stature alongside the games it inspired, such as Galactic Civilizations III and Endless Space. Having snatched up the rights to the series during Atari’s bankruptcy proceedings in 2013, Wargaming are planning to do just that, and have announced a reboot of the series.
Best known for games like World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, Wargaming are actually handing development over to another party, NGD Studios in Argentina. However, they do say that members of the original MoO team are also working on this revival, which should hopefully help the game keep some of the same spirit from the series’ heyday.
