Mark Cerny’s Team Tipped To “Finish” The Last Guardian

Blimey, you wait around eight years for news on The Last Guardian and then it all starts appearing at once – surely that’s got to mean something? Anyway, the latest gossip is that PS4 architect and Knack creator, Mark Cerny, has been drafted in to finish off The Last Guardian.

The information comes from a recent PS Nation podcast episode when Just Add Water founder Stewart Gilray implied that Mark was working on the project.

I did hear a funny story about Last Guardian. It’s a certain somebody’s software team [working on it], and that certain somebody is the guy who helped out with the architecture of the Vita and PS4. I’m led to believe that he’s — his team is now running Last Guardian to finish.

It is assumed that the story and plot of the game were finished ages back, Ueda has said that “core elements” were locked in as far back as 2009. We also know that production on The Last Guardian was delayed so SCE Japan Studio could work on Knack, so it seems possible the Knack team are now working on The Last Guardian.

At TSA Towers TLG has been the topic of many conversations recently and when Uncharted 4 got delayed I suggested that Sony might throw everyone they could at The Last Guardian with a view of it replacing Drake this Christmas.

Am I right? Less than a week till we find out.

  1. Knack 2: The Last Guardian

  2. Apart form the TSA podcast, obvs, PS Nation is my fave. Was nice to hear a brief snippet about Gravity Crash on PS4 from this episode too.

  3. The Last Guardian saved by the Knack-er’s yard? :)

  4. If it were me, I’d just can it and move on. let it live in mythology only

People have been waiting so long for it, if it comes out and it is not one of the best games ever, it’ll just take so much (probably unjustified) flack because people have been waiting so long for it that their expectations have swelled beyond reality.

    • Yep, I think that’ll be the problem too – A single pixel out of place & all of a sudden it’ll be a 0/10 game, regardless of whatever they may have gotten right.

I think people’s expectations of this game are way too high already & it’s almost doomed to fail IMO. Not saying that I hope it does of course, just that we gamers tend to be a fickle bunch.

      • Imagine the outcry if the main campaign is only 6 hours long and there’s no MP.

It will be like The Order all over again.

Took 10 years to make. Completed it in 6 hours.

So many potential breakdowns, it might be safer for the world not to release it at all.

      • Ico only took around 6 hours or so to play and didn’t have multiplayer. It’ll be fine! :-)

    • These long delayed games don’t tend to turn out too well. Duke nukem forever springs to mind. They’re usually delayed so much for a reason.

  5. Cerny gets welcomed on stage, people cheer, expecting The Last Guardian.

    Knack 2 announced. Deadly silence.

    • I really enjoyed Knack.

I’d be that one guy at the back who whoop!’s as it goes silent and then pretends like it wasn’t me. Knack… Who the hell likes Knack… Turning around in disgust as I attempt to locate the perpetrator. I think it was that guy over there!

  6. The emotional distress this game has caused me is ridiculous ha!

  7. I’m remaining excited but TLG been a long, long time in the wings now, the TSA comments cynicism is getting to me! I’m hoping it’ll just be a magical game that borrows heavily from ICO, not setting my hopes too high.

  8. As core elements were locked in as far back as 2009 I’ve high hopes this won’t be disappointing as some people think it will be.Hopefully all Cerney is doing is adding the finishing touches to an nearly finished game.
