A Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed to GameSpot that the forthcoming DVR function for Xbox One will require an external hard drive.
“You need an external hard-drive specifically for DVR because we want to keep the [storage] paths optimized between playing games and watching TV,”said project lead Richard Irving. “We don’t want them to interact with each other.”
In other news, Microsoft have also announced… an external hard for the Xbox One. What a coincidence. They have partnered with Seagate to create an official Xbox One (and Xbox 360) 2TB USB 3.0 external HDD which will be priced at $110.

$110? If you convert that to £ and add VAT, you get £85. So they’ll be selling it for somewhere between £85 and $110 then.
A quick look on Amazon finds what must be exactly the same drive (except in black, not with a green bit on) for £64.99.
I do love that whole “you need an external drive because reasons” crap though. What a coincidence they sell one.
I wonder if it’ll fail for no obvious reason and then be a complete arse to work out what’s wrong, like Windows 10? (I knew it was a bad idea to comment on anything MS do this week, after the complete farce of Windows 10 upgrades)

We’ve had windows 10 since launch day,with no issues so far touch wood everyone in our household prefers it to windows 8/8.1

It appears to be an improvement, yes. But the bugger is just refusing to install on my PC.
That’s after I eventually got it to try installing. Optional updates may be mandatory before it’ll attempt it, for some reason. Then there’s the mysterious error c1900101-2000c (nobody’s quite worked out what that is yet). Then it reboots during install (fine, to be expected) and complains there’s no system disk!
The swearing was loud and creative, I can assure you.
Reboot it and it finds the system disk and happily restores everything to what it was before it tried upgrading. Which is a relief. Except it now needs to download the 3 gig of installation files before it can try again (you can guess the speed of _that_ download at the moment).
It’s a complete disaster for a large number of people so far. And a pleasant and simple process for many others. I’d definitely advise holding off on the upgrade for a few weeks though.

I haven’t had any problems with the 10 upgrade from 8.1 apart from the integral email program in 10 which is a bit borked…well a lot borked actually with it’s constant exiting to the Windows home screen whilst trying to read mail.
Think I’ll skip that and install something that works….in the meantime though just use the ipad for mailing!

Sorry, but their reasoning checks out. If you record TV on the same drive used for gaming, you’ll bottleneck the drive. Which result in poor performance for the game and possible issues with the recording.
The question is if they’ve kept this in mind for those who use an external drive for game storage, or if it’ll actually try to use that same drive.
I’m not going to argue on value of this drive though, one can easily find cheaper/better ones.

That’s a nice looking hard drive looks very similar to the one I dismantled and put in my PS4 (except black) bought for around £50-£60 I think from Argos,I then took the 1tb one I had in my PS4 and put it in the casing so I could use that if I wanted with my Xbox one but I’ll stick with sky+.

PS3 could do this to the same HDD eons ago.
The reason for the problem is MS left no leeway for future development so once a game is writing to the drive there is no further bandwidth available for anything else. A big error on a device with ~7 year lifetime. Presumably the internal HDD can be used as a buffer when an external drive is used for games and TV, or they are in trouble.
