EA Moving Future UK Releases To Thursdays

To bring the UK releases in line with the rest of Europe, EA have announced they’re moving all future UK game launches to Thursdays rather than Fridays, as has been the norm for years.

As part of the announcement, a few upcoming titles have new release dates, which are as follows:

  • Madden NFL 16 – August 27
  • FIFA 16 – September 24
  • Need for Speed – November 5
  • Star Wars Battlefront – November 19
  • Until now, players in the UK have had to wait until Friday for new EA games to release, one day after the rest of Europe. We realised that players wanted to be able to get in the game the same time as their friends across Europe and we’re happy to make this change.

    1. Interesting, but it makes me wonder why it became the norm to release games on Fridays in the UK, when it’s clear they don’t need to be. If publishers can choose any day they want, why not bring us in line with the US and start releasing games on Tuesdays? Surely that would also work better with the weekly chart too, which is announced every Monday.

      • Weird. I tried a reply to explain why it might be a Friday, and it ended up in that mysterious place things go when they vanish. And it thinks I posted it. I’ve created an invisible ghost reply.

        • The “Imagisphere” as Steven Fry would have us believe on LBP.:)

      • Payday for some people? Or maybe that on a Friday you’ll think “I know, I’ll pick up a new game for the weekend” instead of renting videos/dvds? (Is that still a thing or a relic of a bygone era?)

        • Yeah, I thought that Friday fit better due to the fact that you would likely only have the Tuesday/Thursday evening to play – On a Friday, you can hammer it all weekend long should you feel the need to.

        • If it’s out Thursday there’s nothing to stop you buying it Friday though?

Currently it’s arbitrarily held back for ‘tradition’. Common sense move by EA, I expect other pubs to follow suit.

        • Some people need to see themselves as ‘first adopters’ I suppose?

Doesn’t really bother me too much – If I see a game I want, I just tend to buy it (& then not play it for weeks anyway!). ;)

        • Friday is the new Thursday. Went out for dinner Thursday just gone, didn’t bother booking, just as well we went early because they were turning people away at the door! Could be because it was Thursday, could be because of the steak, mmmm.

    2. It would be nice if we got simultaneous worldwide release dates instead of being a few days behind the US. Tuesdays always seemed a strange release day though, Fridays make more sense.

    3. Ah but in what way will Tuesday become the new Friday?

Instead of releasing on a Friday they’ll release on the following Tuesday rather than the Tuesday before!

      • Where did Tuesdays enter the discussion?

        • Tuesday is new release day for the US, mentioned in the first comment.

What about all of us that get a monthly bank payment, any bollocking day of the week will do :P

    4. This is the first time i’ve heard that we we’re behind the rest of Europe when it came to release dates, good to know.
