Following the seemingly endless teaser stream from yesterday – which you can see alongside all of the speculation below – Ubisoft have officially announced Far Cry Primal. As was leaked, it’s a Stone Age spin off from the popular FPS franchise, that’s set to appear on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 23rd 2016, with a Windows PC release to follow in March.
Taking players back to 10,000BC, you’ll step into the role of Takkar, the lone survivor of a hunting group, stuck in the land of Oros with the sole goal of surviving. It’s a time period in which humans were far from the dominant species, armed with rudimentary spears and bow and arrow, which is bound to make those moments where you’re terrorised by a seemingly invulnerable eagle all the more challenging.
There’s a feeling that this is a much larger scale production than Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was, as well, with Ubisoft Montreal as the lead studio in collaboration Ubisoft’s studios in Toronto, Shanghai and Kiev.
The original post follows.
Well this is a surprise, Ubisoft seem to have something prehistoric to announce but we have no idea what it is. A live stream has just popped up with what appears to be a cave painting of a man dressed in animal skins, and we expect it to start showing us something more any second now.

What could it be? A cave man themed spin off of Far Cry or Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Cave Man are our guesses, but whatever it is it’s rather unusual, games don’t get announced this time of year as publishers are focused on the Christmas market.
Developing, as they say on other websites.
UPDATE: Well the feed has been live for almost two hours and some new images have appeared, what appears to be a spaceman on the bottom left and a large hand print. The image is very slowly zooming out but we’re still in the dark, guess away!
UPDATE 2: This looks like it’s going to be a very long reveal, rather than just a holding page before a video kicks in, which is what we assumed. We will check back in the morning and see what has happened, hopefully that irritating soundtrack of someone having a damp orgasm will have ceased by then.
Other staff guesses for what it could be: Call of Jurez: Prehistory, Driver: The Early Years, Just Dance: Flintstones, Petz: Dinosaurz, Shaun White: Mammoth Boarding – and I apologise for this last one – I Just Invented The Wheel, Man!
UPDATE 3: We’re back, as Ubisoft Switzerland have just tweeted this

UPDATE 4: Kotaku’s Jason Schreier tweets “I heard a while ago that Ubisoft was working on a prehistoric Far Cry – guess they’re about to announce it. FWIW I heard this one’s set in the Ice Age so I’m not sure about dinosaurs. Mammoths maybe? Sabre-toothed tigers? As a few people have pointed out they can reskin FC4’s elephants as mammoths! Might be called Far Cry Primal.”
UPDATE 5: A hastily deleted tweet from IGN Turkey.

UPDATE 6: Morning. It’s still going. Woo.
UPDATE 7: The video has reset and has started from the very beginning again. Tsk.

Worst reveal ever.

Not quite sure why they felt the need to slap the Far Cry label on it. Apart from money, obviously. Is it not good enough to make it on it’s own, without a completely unrelated name?
Should have given us a sequel to that Blood Dragon thing. Just the right size for a Far Cry game to enjoy it without getting bored of endless collectibles. And it had some lovely swearing in.

Traversing a huge map on foot is gonna be a bit shit. Apart from that, looks fun. Brutally caving in skulls with clubs and the like!

Dinosaurs would have been better but I suppose they would have to create the dinosaur models from scratch and their individual movements / characteristics etc. Not quite as easy as sticking some giant tusks on a Far Cry 4 elephant and covering it with fur. I didn’t think the elephants were all that In Far Cry 4 anyway. Stupid elephants. *sulks*
To be fair it does look quite good and I really like the Far Cry games. I guess we’ll get a Dinosaur spin off with Far Cry 5.

After playing, and enjoying, FC2 and 3, I already skipped the last sequel. I think I start to get bored of sequels which are just more of the same, there’s plenty of new stuff to play, and limited time.
So, the crucial question here is, if they just slapped the Far Cry label on it for the attention and sales, and whether this actually will be a new kind of experience. Find that difficult to tell from the trailer.

First I have to play Far Cry 4 and since I dont even own a PS4 yet, this game will have to do smth amazing to stay on my radar.
