Sony’s game streaming service, PlayStation Now, has changed the way it charges for games. Previously you had to rent each title at a rather high price, but now it will cost you £12.99 a month for unlimited access to 100 PlayStation games.

The service currently includes Uncharted, The Last of Us, XCOM, God of War III, The Walking Dead, Bioshock Infinite, Ico, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Dirt Showdown, Dead Island, InFamous, Darksiders II, Saints Row IV, Sonic 4, Metro Last Light and many more. Now they have adjusted the pricing it does seem like a good way to catch up on games you may have missed.

Brilliant news. £5 more than 30 days for 1 game.
Amphlett
‘Folding’, is that still taking place?
Jas-n
Not on here (or actively by me). I need my tag changing.
MrYd
For once it’s not more expensive here than the US. The monthly cost for the US is $19.99, which works out just about exactly the same as we get to pay. Actually, we get it cheaper, because that $19.99 would then have 20% VAT added on to it. Making it about £15.60, if I can count and Google was using an accurate exchange rate.
Are we not getting the 3-month option? $45 in the US, so based on that £12.99 price, we should have a 3-month option for £29.99, or the magical under a tenner a month price point.
ABlokeCalledDaz
Ssh! Don’t tell them we’re getting it cheaper than the US, they’ll soon sort that out.
Amphlett
I notice that Sony have rather annoyingly also put the “PS Now” icon towards the start of my games list.
Are these games all PS3 and older games?
MrYd
Did you try it out as part of the beta?
The icon has jumped up to first in the list, but if you don’t use it, it’ll work it’s way along to the right and eventually disappear (once you’ve started a number of other things).
I thought it was supposed to be part of the store now, and not a separate app. That’s what happened once they started charging. The app was only used when everything was free in beta.
tonyyeb
If they do the same 3 month US sub price and works out at £29.99 and they add Gran Turismo 6 then I would be tempted.
MrYd
Two things…
First, it inevitably auto-renews your subscription. Although it does clearly state this and tell you how to turn it off.
Second, you need to provide card details if you want the 7 day trial. You can pay your £12.99 from any balance you have on your PSN account, but you can’t have the 7 day trial without a card. Obviously that’s to stop you making lots of PSN accounts and having a 7 day trial on each of them. And so they can take payment from people who forget to cancel before the trial is over.
If only they’d launched it early in the summer with a £30 for 3 months option. I’d be very tempted then.
Amphlett
Ouch. I’m very wary about where I provide card details and given PS Network’s past (and presumably current but not publicly noticed) problems with security I won’t providing my details for this service.
Avenger
If it’s the same as PS+ then you can punch in your details, subscribe to the trial or 1 month period, and then wipe your details off the system. If you keep your wallet topped up, I’d imagine it would take the money from the wallet in the future. At least that’s what can be done with PS+.
MrYd
Not really any need to get too paranoid about that, is there? Even with that big hack a few years ago, nobody lost anything. Card details were safe.
Other details may have leaked, not being subject to the strict rules about storing card details, and that may have made it easier for people to go trick people into revealing other details.
You could, if you really want to be paranoid, sign up for the 7 days, and then delete the card details. Assuming Sony let you delete them.
Avenger
Sony let the main billing details be wiped irrespective of PS+ membership, so I’m guessing it would be okay.
What you call paranoia though I would call taking a bit of wisdom. It’s not just security. Sony are unpredictable with the store, their pricing, whether something like a PS+ sub is really cancelled (ironically, there is no option to outright cancel PS+). They’d have a way to go with earning trust and proving themselves reliable. The same is true of a few other companies I’ve purchased things from.
TSBonyman
You could try one of those prepaid/disposable credit cards.
Nylon_Angel
Stupid question but are the games on it trophy supported.
MrYd
There are some very old games there that don’t have trophies.
But for most of them that do, yes, you can earn trophies. And you can move saves between PS Now and a real PS3 (although I never tried it). May require PS+ for that, although it doesn’t require PS+ for just playing PS Now games.
Nylon_Angel
Brilliant, thank you.
hazelam
well, that’s better than renting per title, but it’s still a little pricey for me.
from a technical standpoint, i found the service to work really well actually, surprised me how well it worked, i wouldn’t have known the games were streamed if, welll, if i didn’t know they were streamed. ^_^
but i just can’t personally justify 13 quid a months for this.
MrYd
We really need the 3 month option for £30 or less. As it is, it’s cheaper than the US, but only for a single month. Get it down to under £10 a month and it’ll look a lot more tempting.
But having said that, I could see myself having for a month every now and then. If I’d not got anything else on the go, pay £13 and have a go at 3 or 4 games. Probably things I wouldn’t have paid for otherwise.
ABlokeCalledDaz
I like the idea of the subscription service, it’s a bit out of my price range at the moment but maybe I could be tempted…..
JR.
This isn’t too bad a price I suppose when you consider how many games you have at your disposal.
I’m currently paying £10 a month for unlimited game rentals but that includes PS4/XB1/Wii U games as well as last gen games and portables.
I might see how it performs now in it’s final state with the 7 day trial. I didn’t rate it when I tried the beta.
NicholasHeathfield
Oo. Who with?
JR.
Boomerangrentals. Been signed up for a few months now and it’s a great service. Saved me a fortune in new games.
AngryCoward
Boomerang do it, but it’s 1 game at a time, this is 100 games you can play without any waiting. Far far better
JR.
I only really ever play one game at a time though. I usually have something else (ps plus offerings) to play whilst waiting for the next game from boomerang.
Sent back The Witcher 3 on Thursday just gone, they dispatched the Uncharted collection on Friday and it arrived in the post this morning.
Im not saying PS Now is a bad service but being able to play brand new games AND a whole backcatalogue of old games across ALL platforms (even handhelds) is much better imo. You can even pay extra for the 2 game sub and get 2 games at a time if you wish, so you always have a game to play. I havent found the waiting times that bad so far though.
beeje13
That’s… really good actually. For the odd month when you have not much to play, which for me I don’t see anytime soon.
