According to figures posted by Boerse Online and Le Figaro which were compiled by our favourite chartsters, GFK, sales of PlayStation 4 thrashed those of Xbox One by a huge margin in France and Germany during 2015.
In France the PS4 sold 1 million units, with 3DS grabbing second place with 686,000. Xbox One shifted 298,000 with Wii U nipping at it’s heels with 228,000. That means for every Xbox sold, Sony shifted over three PlayStation 4s.
In Germany the gap is even wider with 1.4 million PS4s and vs 270,000 Xbox consoles, giving Sony a massive 5 to 1 sale advantage.
Meanwhile in Japan Microsoft sold a grand total of 99 Xbox One consoles last week, vs 25,000 PS4s.
Microsoft have stopped releasing official sales figures but it’s estimated that worldwide sales of Xbox One are around 18-19 million, with PlayStation 4 way ahead with over 36 million units sold.
Recently, Analysts have suggested that signing Tomb Raider as a timed exclusive to Xbox could have cost Square Enix around $100 million in lost sales.

I expected XB1 sales to be worse in Europe tbh and PS4 sales to be better. Only 1 million PS4’s sold in the whole of France? 1.4 million in Germany? Doesn’t seem many for the whole year. XB1 sales aren’t great but they’re not as bad as I thought either. Who are the 99 people who bought one in Japan :)
As for TR, it does appear to have been a bad move on Square Enix’s part. Choosing to release the game on the same day as Fallout 4 was another. Plus, TR has always sold better on Playstation. I’m really not sure what Square Enix were thinking tbh but hey, you win some, you loose some. I just hope the next one doesn’t continue the story from Rise as the final cutscene seemed to suggest. I really didn’t like the story at all.
It will be interesting to see how well it sells on PC and PS4. They may need to reboot TR again if sales for Rise are as bad as they seem. How can they continue the story if only a small number of gamers have played the previous game?

Have a good look through the years to get a feeling for how consoles sell in each region (and country) and you can see that the PS4 is doing blindingly well. It’s something I felt a generation or two ago when I thought “oh, that’s not much” and I just needed context. It was a bucket-load! :D
