[UPDATE]Insomniac Reveal Their New Game, Song Of The Deep

After a short tease Insomniac Games have revealed their next title, a free-diving / submarine, metroidvania style adventure called Song of The Deep. You play as Merryn, a young girl who is trying to find her fisherman father who has been lost to the depths.

“We’ve been hard at work on a new world,” explains Brian Hastings, Chief Creative Officer at Insomniac. “This one is built on a fantasy that I think we all share. The fantasy of the terrors and wonder that might lie in the depths of the sea. The endless possibilities that could be just outside our view, and the still undiscovered nightmares that might lurk in the deep.”

Song of the Deep will launch this Summer on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, as a boxed product or as a digital download for $14.99.

UDPATE: It has been revealed that bricks and mortar retailer GameStop will be publishing the game, their first foray in to the world of publishing.

“That’s the beauty of it,” explains GameStop’s Mark Stanley, “Having the inside scoop on all the GameStop ecosystem from store signage to digital channels and our most valuable asset, which is our 45,000 store associates, most of which are totally passionate gamers. What happens if we point all these things toward one game that we are 1000 percent behind?”

“Traditionally what we do with games from various publishers is we piggyback on their marketing and the plans that they have, and we try to leverage our GameStop platform to augment that, but in this case we’re going to really blend the entire structure for marketing around this game from soup to nuts,” Stanley continued. “We’re putting everything together, plans for retail launch in GameStop stores around the world, how we can support the title, what’s going to be the framework for store associates, all the way to details on where we’d place posters and the game.”

If they game does well then it seems there are already plans for a sequel. “That’s always our goal. We don’t build games or stories with the intention of doing a one and done approach,” said Insonmniac’s Ted Price. “For us, every one of these games has personal appeal.”

  1. Well this one could certainly go either way!
    Remember echo the dolphin?

    • Ecco?

I remember it. Spent ages not knowing what to do, found it quite hard, then spent the rest of my time getting as deep as possible so I could surface at speed and leap out the surface. Loved it for some reason.

  2. Reminded me of the old BBC Micro game “Thrust”… That trailer has got me interested…

  3. It looks great, i’m going to be tempted.

  4. Looks great. Very interested.

  5. Reminds me a little bit of the underwater sections in Child of Light. It looks ok I guess but it looks like something you’d expect to see in the ps plus lineup. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I expected something more from the studio that brought us Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance and Sunset Overdrive. This seems very small scale for them.

    • Yeah I have to agree, through the whole trailer I was like “this is Insomniacs new game….really…Insomniac”.

  6. Well this looks interesting… Will be keeping an eye on this!
