EA Accidently Reveal How Many Xbox One Consoles Have Been Sold

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen was on an EA financial call yesterday and may have revealed just how many Xbox Ones have been sold.

We know Sony said that had sold just under 37 million PlayStation 4 consoles, in fact they recently said they had shipped almost 38 million, so there’s plenty of stock in the stores. During the call Jorgensen revealed that the combined install base was 55 million, so simple maths tells us that Xbox One sales are around 18-19 million.

However, Xbox One is still outselling any previous Xbox console so Microsoft will be happy about that. Obviously, PlayStation 4 is outselling everything, ever, including PlayStation 2 and hot cakes.

Mmmmm, cake.

  1. So almost a perfect 2:1 ratio in Sony’s favour. That’s so genuinely impressive.

    • And it’s odd too because at least at this point, it’s hard to find a game worth playing on PS4 instead of other platform (like PC). No really great exclusives came out in the past few months and the rest of the games are multiplatforms. It seems like PS4 is just riding the wave of “future games”. Hell, I actually have 2 PS4s (I travel between two homes in two different countries a lot) AND a gaming PC, and while I love my PS4, a lot of the time I can’t find a reason to turn it on.

      • That would suggest that you simply aren’t looking hard enough (or don’t want to), which is fair enough if you do generally prefer PC gaming.

You can’t really say that there isn’t stuff worth turning it on for though – I personally am having difficulty finding time to get through the games I have to play right now, let alone ones I want to purchase & play.

      • I get what you’re saying but I don’t think there are ANY groundbreaking exclusive games on PS4 or XB1. Yet. I think we might see some on the PS4 this year.

There are still some ‘good’ exclusives on the PS4. Just taking into account last year, I thought The Order 1886, Until Dawn, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and the Uncharted Collection were all good but my favourite games overall were all multiplatform releases.

I’d say 90% of the games I play are multiplatform and I always get them on the PS4 because I want the best version available (excluding PC of course).

      • I don’t prefer PC gaming. But when I look at a game on PS4 and then on PC I go “oh, this looks really good on PC, why does it look like last gen on PS4?”

Maybe it’s just that I’m not really a gamer anymore and haven’t been since PS2. Or maybe it’s the nostalgia value of the older games.

Truth to be told, I bought my current PS4s to finish MGS V with 100% completion and while I had fun, that game was terrible as a MGS title and I’m a huge fan of the series. And since then, there are no console games for me until Uncharted 4 comes out. I did play Fallout 4 but that was on PC as it was the least buggy version. I am playing Rainbow 6 Siege on PS4, but I could play that on any platform.

        Where are the exclusives?

      • Bloodborne and Driveclub have been pretty groundbreaking experiences for me. I almost dismissed Bloodborne having not enjoyed the Dark Souls games but it turned out to be one of the most terrifyingly enjoyable games i’ve ever played.
And in over thirty years of gaming, Driveclub is the first racing game to keep me playing it regularly a year and a half later.

      • Its quite weird as I thought that the general theme of ‘exclusives are bad’ had been covered many times before (not by any of us in conversation of course, but just in general!) – Overall, it’s all down to choice, but I personally only have my PS4 as an option (PC gaming doesn’t really appeal to me), so I already have a backlog of great games to play. Lengthy ones too in a lot of cases, unfortunately.

I don’t think that there is the massive gulf between how something looks on PC vs PS4 that Devil refers to though. They generally look quite similar, mostly. I couldn’t really give a toss about the odd pixel here or there – Certainly not enough to go & build an expensive rig & all the gear that would cater for that anyway.

      • I dont think exclusive games are the reason, simply Microsoft completely cocked up the XB1 reveal and launch, and have never recovered.

      • Yeah and Adam Orth owes Microsoft a shit-ton of money.

      • Driveclub was great. I don’t like racing games but I really enjoyed this and I still go back to it now.

I didn’t like Bloodborne. Not saying it’s a bad game but I just didn’t ‘get’ it at all.

I know it gets some stick and I’m going against the crowd here but I actually think Knack is one of my favourite PS4 exclusives. Maybe I enjoyed it more because it was one of the first games I played on my brand new shiny PS4 but there was just something about it.

Other notable mentions… Until Dawn, Infamous Second Son, Infamous First light, Killzone, The Order, LBP3, Resogun.

They’re all good games but I don’t think we have seen the PS4’s defining game/games yet.

  2. Did someone mention cake?

What sort of cake? Can I have some?

    • Note how I didn’t point out the error in the “simple” maths too? 55 – 37 = 18, and 55 – 38 = 17

So it’s 17 to 18 million for the XBox. Or less than half the PS4 numbers.

And after only 2 years, without any huge price drops, the PS4 has sold 1/4 of the total PS2 sales. Could it sell more in the end? Or will they do what they did with the PS4 and release a PS5 too early and kill sales?

Actually, those XBone sales are only a bit less than 1/4 of the 360 sales too. So both Sony and MS aren’t doing too badly. Although MS will completely kill of XBone sales as soon as something new comes along.

      • He said they’ve sold under 37 million, so it is 18-19 million. The number 38 doesn’t come into it. Yes I am a maths fanboy, and yes I needed to defend the facts.

Your inductive reasoning leaves much to be desired too :p

      • 55 – almost 37 makes just over 18 million. And the “almost 38 million” gives just over 17 million.

So it’s just over 17 to 18 million. Unless the 55 million for both is closer to 56 million.

Let’s call it somewhere between 16 and 19 million. Then everyone’s right.

      • Well the shipped 38 million doesn’t matter because we’re talking about the install base. Under 37 means over 18 conversely, so it’s enough to say 18-19 isn’t it. 17-18 implies under 18, which would not be the case.

      • Let it go, let it go, can’t hold it back anymorrre.

      • Driveclub was great. I don’t like racing games but I really enjoyed this and I still go back to it now.

I didn’t like Bloodborne. Not saying it’s a bad game but I just didn’t ‘get’ it at all.

      • Oops, I posted that in the wrong place.

  3. The cake is a lie.

  4. That’s cool for the market in general, especially after wannabe clever analysts on Engadget and elsewhere declared consoles dead before the launch of this gen.
However, Sony being that much in the lead is less cool for us consumers. A healthy competition would be better for us all, as we can see each month in lame Plus offerings.

And, of course, the cake IS a lie.

  5. The Xbone is doing great. But the PS4 is outdoing everybody’s expectations. It’s the perfect storm.

  6. As it is the xboxone is doing fine and probably better than ms were expecting, it’s just overshadowed because the ps4 is doing so well, well beyond anyone’s expectations.
