Assassin’s Creed May Not Return As A Yearly Franchise

When Assassin’s Creed returns, presumably in 2017, in may not return as the yearly franchise we’ve become accustomed too.

Ubisoft top dog Yves Guillemot spoke at an Investor Day presentation and said, “The goal is not automatically to come back on annual cycle but to come on a regular basis. We saw it was time to give it lots of time so [developers] could really work on the property and all the mechanics to make sure we could take [the series] to another level.”

“What we are seeing today is promising. We will be able to come on a regular basis [but] we can’t say every year,” he added.

Ubisoft have a number of big franchises on their books including the more recent additions such as The Crew and Watch Dogs. They also have a brand new AAA game in the works which will be “multiplayer focused”, and that will be out within a year so there are plenty of titles that could be used as a tentpole release each Christmas.

  1. This can only be good for the series in the long run. It’s felt far too much like they’ve just been churning them out recently and folks will be hungrier for a sequel if they have to wait for it.

  2. One one irrational hand, I think it’s a bit of a shame. Despite the obvious issues I did kinda like looking forward to AC every year.

On the other (more rational) hand, this is a good thing. Should give the franchise room to breath and improve on the better aspects. Hopefully a modern story that is less shit/non-existent, too.

  3. Ubisoft have plenty of big IP’s to fill any gaps.

  4. It makes sense as people were becoming bored of the franchise plus some of the glitches in previous games didn’t help. Now they have time to make it as good as they can without rushing it.On the flip side it’ll be a lot of money Ubisoft are set to miss out on,i wonder if they have another game to be released in-between the Assassins Creed games to make up the profits?

    • Obviously. It’s Watch Dogs 2.
