Video: Mid-Game Impressions From Dark Souls III

The review embargo has lifted for Dark Souls 3 this morning, and many of the verdicts are in on the latest in this brutal and challenging series. While we’re not quite ready to give it a score, if you’re eager to see and hear what lies in wait, I posed a few questions to Dave, who’s been playing the game for our review.

Or to briefly sum up some thoughts in written form, I hand you over to Dave himself:

I’ve spent the past few days nigh-on losing my marbles to Dark Souls III. There have been highs, there have been frustrating moments, and there have been times where I’ve nearly broken my controller. That tends to be the way with Souls games, learning patterns and eventually earning that triumphant moment of bliss as you take down a difficult boss. Dark Souls III keeps this trend.

One thing that we didn’t mention in this video, partly because I hadn’t really made use of it before we recorded, is the new Weapon Arts system. Taking the PS4 version, pressing the L2 button will now initiate a skill that is attached to the weapon. For example, the Katana’s weapon art is the typical stance you see in samurai movies, while the standard sword has you assume a stance from which you can attack.

While my review will take just a little longer, having only just gotten to a point where I feel that I could consider reviewing it and doing it justice, I can already say that I would recommend it for those of you who enjoy Dark Souls’ particular brand of punishing gameplay.

  1. It looked like Dave was trying to take down that giant tree with a toothpick! :)
Dark Souls 3 looks great but it’s making me yearn to get back into Bloodborne, which i still have about a third to play through yet – but too many games on the go atm.. sigh..

    • That “toothpick” has saved my skin numerous times. Killed that boss with said weapon too!

      • Fun fact: toothpicks are often made of trees.
