Bethesda Show Off Doom’s SnapMap

One of the more unexpected aspects of the upcoming Doom is the new SnapMap mode, which puts tools of creation in the hands of the players and lets you get making your own maps and game modes. Bethesda showed off more of the possibilities that this gives you in a stream last night.

You’ll want to skip forward to the 13 minute mark for the stream to actually begin, but they get stuck right into a sped up variant of Team Deathmatch on a custom, retro-styled map. But it’s much more than, with a co-op mode that had two players working to kill as many demons and enemies as possible, while also trying to extend the maps timer, in order to reach a higher and higher score. One mode demoed even featured a form of basketball called Baskeboom!

There’s tons of options available to you, in other words, with single player, co-op and multiplayer, the ability to modify weapon damage, health, speed, modify the HUD, the controls and even more. You’ll want to skip to the 35 minute mark to see the map creation in action, but while it looks intimidating, the emphasis is on simplicity and letting you quickly get creating. Of course, you can just hop in and play other people’s creations.

Some of what you can do hinges on SnapPoints that you earn from creating, sharing and playing. These are used to buy customisation items for your character, new tiles to use in the map creation, and so on.

It’s really a fascinating addition to the game, bringing a little bit of that LittleBigPlanet vibe to a fast paced, gore-filled FPS.

  1. So, it’s map making?

    Cool.

Wonder how many cock maps will be created? What?

There is always at least one cock whenever a map creator is made.
