A Third Of Valve’s Staff Working In VR Related Roles

Valve has a major stake in VR and its success especially since it collaborated with HTC on the Vive.  Now Alan Yates of Valve has stated in a comment on Reddit that around a third of the company is dedicated to the platform, working on various projects both in terms of technical and software applications. There’s also talk of development on the next generation of headsets.

“I was super fortunate to start at Valve right around the time Michael Abrash had begun the AR/VR research team. It was a much smaller team then than it is now, it has since grown to encompass about a third of the company, but the key individuals that solved most of the really hard technological problems and facilitated this generation of consumer headsets are still here working on the next generation.”

Of course where Valve goes next with VR will only be known by staff there, while the rest of us can merely speculate.

From the heady days of the Mega Drive up until the modern day gaming has been my main hobby. I'll give almost any game a go.

  1. Just imagine a VR version of Portal…

Although I’d probably feel quite sick flying through the air between portals!

  2. and the other two thirds, aren’t working on any kind of quality control for greenlight.

  3. A third? That’s got a 3 in it… OMG Half Life 3 confirmed!!!!!

Or probably not. FFS Valve why must you torture us so? Couldn’t give a rats ass about VR TBH, just give me HL3 already, or if not at least Portal 3.

  4. Wait a minute….

    A THIRD!?

Third equals 3. Valve is 3 times larger then it was when Half Life launched. There wasn’t a Half Life 3 on PS3 or X360. Both consoles contained 3 in! Valve did Portal and Left For dead. 3 franchise on consoles and PC. 3 platforms! Meaning..

CONFIRMED! HALF LIFE 3 WILL HAPPEN!

Oh and erm… Greenlight is going to be flooded with shitty VR games. Digital Homicide will sue Jim Sterling again despit getting their arses handed to them in court for their shitty VR games failing.(I mean, look at DH’s history. Look at Jim’s videos. Jim will win.) And the third that is working on VR will probably take 10 years to pump out a single game as Valve no longer do games.

    Only steam.

  5. “Super fortunate” *face palms at the demise of the English language*.

Anyway, outside of my own gripes, I’ve been curious as to what Valve staff do these days. It’s clearly not all focussed on games development and I was wondering if they were just having money fights every day to keep themselves busy.

At least now I know! :D
