Sony Relists New DualShock 4 Design Patent

Back in 2014 Sony listed a patent for a new design of the DualShock 4, which featured extra buttons, a slightly different layout and the ability to change the face buttons. At the time nothing came of it but now Sony has relisted the patent, which could mean that the company is looking to release a new controller alongside the PlayStation Neo. The controller does seem to follow the philosophy of the Xbox One Elite controller, which was released a little while back.

The design shows new locations for the Share and Option buttons, which have been moved below the main face button circles. There are also buttons on the grips of the pad too. The touchpad also appears to be bigger due to the re-positioning of the other buttons. Of course it remains to be seen if Sony will publicly acknowledge this redesign soon.

  1. Ugh, looks like it still has the concave analogue sticks :(

    • I use Orb’s ‘PS4 Analogue Thumb Grips’ from ShopTo, pretty good and less than £3.

      • They are good, Gazza just bloody get some, if you really really hate them I’ll send you three quid so you’re not out of pocket :)

      • To be honest I can’t remember the last time I played a game on my PS4, so its hardly worth it! Its basically just an Amazon Prime player now…

  2. I like the larger touch pad, and the more buttons the better.

  3. If those buttons labelled 17L and 17R are the “share” and “options” buttons, that’s a terrible design. They’re currently out of the way and hard to accidentally press. And to deliberately press in a hurry too.

Put them in that new location, and you’ll be hitting them all the time.

Even the PS3 had the start/select buttons out of the way in a sensible place. I miss the PS3 controllers. Everything about them was better, except they didn’t have a pointless light. Or a touchpad you can never reach.

    • If you think you’ll accidentally hit those you may have some sort of motor-function problem with your hands/fingers/thumbs. :-)

    • I think the DS4 has one major improvement – the stiffness of the analogue sticks. For me, the PS3 DS was always way too floaty, it made it very hard to aim accurately, especially if you’d been using the XBOX360’s pad for any amount of time…

    • Well the light is not actually pointless, its there so the camera can track it, more specifically for the PSVR.

  4. If they’re aiming for a elite controller they might to make the battery pack removeable or at least improve the internal battery.

Agree with above that the share button is in a very awkward place.

    • Removable batteries? That’s cave man era man, imagine going to a shop to buy a battery, who does that lol

      • Imagine being stuck with a £100 controller with a built in battery with drained capacity after a year’s use.

No thanks, I’ll stick with my removable rechargeable battery pack idea or better durability for an internal battery. Seems wise for an expensive controller, unless you fancy burning money.

      • You’re not ‘stuck’ with it at all. Replacing the battery is easy, and in fact you can buy aftermarket batteries with much higher capacity than the original solving two of your problems.

Time estimate: 10 – 15 minutes Difficulty: Easy

      • Because Sony would advise everyone to do that :/

  5. I’ve always found the positioning of the Share button awkward and i’m never certain i’ve pressed it hard enough until i hear the Share notification sound. All they really need to do is make it a bit more ‘clicky’ and give it a tactile surface that can found more easily without having to look for it.
