After 13 years of service, PlanetSide’s servers were shut down for good last week. In an era where online games can seemingly disappear at the drop of a hat, whether it’s a poorly concieved multiplayer mode or a fully fledged MMO, it’s a game that had a surprising degree of longevity.
The last few years, it’s run alongside its sequel and was all but abandoned by its developers, who had to shift focus to other games and left the game unpatched while also making it free to play without any form of microtransactions in 2014. The writing’s been on the wall for a long time, but they still made sure that the game went out with a bit of a bang, and fans of the game made sure to log in one last time to see it out.
The games final moments and a montage of some of the battles that had been fought earlier in the day were captured, edited and uploaded by Steven Messener.
Of course, the series lives on in the form of the free to play PlanetSide 2, which first released on PC at the end of 2012 and made the trip to console and PlayStation 4 in June of last year.

Planetside 2 is worth a look. It’s come a long way from the buggy mess it was at (ps4) release.
