Dontnod are best known for last year’s episodic hit, Life Is Strange, but they’re a growing studio with a lot of projects on the go at once. The latest is called Battlecrew Space Pirates, a competitive multiplayer shooter, in the studio’s first attempt at self publishing.
Aside from being a new genre, this game is not like the others in a number of ways. For one thing, it’s being developed by Dontnod Eleven, a team formerly known as Hesaw, and for another, it’s coming to Steam Early Access in the near future, after nearly a year in development.
The pitch is that you play as charismatic heroes that cooperate and compete for the galaxy’s treasures in matches with up to eight players. There’s four different character classes, with new characters and cosmetic unlocks obtained through play and completing bounties, and there will be two modes at the start of Early Access – Gold Rush and Team Deathmatch.
It’s certainly a bit of a departure from Dontnod’s other games, but it’s also fascinating to see them tackle different genres and settings time and time again.
