In the wake of shutting down Evolve development for good, Turtle Rock have been doing a little digging into some of their old backups and project files, coming upon the Left 4 Dead equivalent of a home recording of one of the dozens of lost Doctor Who episodes. Dam It is a whole campaign that was cut from the original Left 4 Dead before it could be finished and shipped.
If you have a copy of the original Left 4 Dead tucked away in your Steam library, you can play it for yourself. Co-founder Chris Ashton took to the Turtle Rock forums to post a link to a version of the campaign that’s been packaged up for use with the retail game.
However, there is still the caveat that it’s not been finished. “Just finished putting the Dam campaign that we streamed a while back into a L4D addon,” Chris writes. “It’s gray box, and some code features are missing but it’s playable from beginning to end. It also includes two standalone survival maps that never shipped.”
So there are known issues:
Releasing as an add-on means that our code changes are not included. Missing code means that the following features are not working:
- Fire, smoke and explosions do not trigger panic events in the hangars.
- Zombies do not crawl all the time in the orchard.
- Farm house mob does not spawn in the far side of the woods.
- Covered bridge does not collapse with explosions.
- Burned forest area is missing wandering fires.
The burning forest section has a burn trigger that stays on too long. If you move quickly you’ll take burn damage.
The dam spawn room is missing health kits and weapons.
The elevator models have an offset origin in the dam. Players can still get on and use them, but they are invisible and wall collision is missing.
I’m off to try and get some other survivors together and try to give this a go!
