Horizon Zero Dawn Sold 2.6 Million Copies In Its First Two Weeks

Developing a brand new IP can be a pretty risky move, especially when your best known for one long standing game series. Guerrilla Games and Sony clearly struck a chord with Horizon Zero Dawn, however, selling 2.6 million copies of the game in its first two weeks on sale. It makes the game the best-selling new first party IP on the PS4 and Guerrilla’s biggest game launch.

It should really come as no surprise that Guerrilla’s Managing Director Herman Hulst said, “This is only the beginning of Aloy’s story and our exploration of the world of Horizon Zero Dawn, with the team already hard at work on an expansion to the story.”

In other words, we can expect to see a game called Horizon First Dawn, Horizon Second Dawn, Horizon Zero Dawn Part Two Two, Horizon Zero Dawn Thirty, Horizon Zero Dawn Part Two, or whatever it is they decide to call the sequel. Another interpretation might be that they’re now working on DLC for this game.

Either way, I’m looking forward to hunting some more Zoids.

I'm probably wearing toe shoes, and there's nothing you can do to stop me!

  1. “the best-selling new first party IP on the PS4”.

I’ve just been tweeting about this into thin air. That’s a very specific category to claim 1st place in. Can somebody please name me so more new first party IPs that have launched on the PS4?

Other than that, well played Guerilla and Sony.

    • The Last Guardian
      Tearaway Unfolded
      The Order: 1886
      Until Dawn
      Here They Lie
      PlayStation VR Worlds

      • Bottom 2 don’t count because I believe psvr counts as its own platform :)

      • Other than that, good Googling! :)

      • Bloodborne is a 3rd party exclusive. Sony don’t own From software. And isn’t TLG a sequel to Ico or Shadow of the Colossus?

      • Bloodborne was published by Sony in all territories, so it’s either first or second party, depending on the ownership of the IP.

Either way, Bloodborne took half a year to pass the 2 million sales mark, so it really doesn’t matter if it’s on the list or not!

    • Nioh

      • Nioh is 3rd party, developed by team ninja.

  2. Definitely deserves good sales. It’s the first game I haven’t been able to put down for a good couple of years – loving it.
I may even go for the platinum to accompany my Driveclub one.

I’m 40+ hours in, only done about a 3rd of the main missions & I’m already looking forward to a sequel or expansion.

    • I’m one Hunting ground away from the Plat and have clocked up about 60 hrs. Loved every moment, it’s never felt grindy or silly.

I’m particularly impressed about the world design, steep areas that, if you were a real human you could scrabble up you can actually get up, unlike Skyrim where a slope will stop you.

      • If it’s the Thunderjaw hunting ground then you’ll enjoy it, tough but incredibly satisfying.
Dave, definitely worth going for the platinum, nothing is particularly hard and it’s a good way to visit all corners of the map and enjoy a bit of photo mode :)

      • I’ve only touched one hunting lodge so I’ve got a feeling it’ll take me 60+ hours.

The world design is excellent. So far I haven’t used a single travel pack as I really don’t mind travelling back & forth to different objectives – just gives me another excuse to take in the atmosphere & battle more zoids in varying ways.

Tonight, I shall be battling a Stormbird again, only this time armed with something other than hard point arrows & a trip caster which didn’t end well.

      • No its the stealth ones. The Thunderjaw one was easy (i have the super armour so i can wander around and they barely touch me)

      • Hah, fair enough! Has the super armour made the game boring at all?

      • No, just made it more fun!

  3. Excellent news, congrats Guerilla! It’s such a good game, even running across the map is fun, even when you’re trying to avoid fights. One thing that dawned on me yesterday was that v1.0 was a complete and fully working game (very minor bugs only), a rare thing these days, almost an old fashioned thing. Similarly old fashioned is their use of the word ‘expansion’, no idea how far I am through the game but I’m very, very excited about the prospect of more story. Horizon Many Brunch, Horizon Billions Lunch, Horizon Infinity Afternoon Tea?

  4. Best game on the PS4 so far and loads of room for expansion.

It’s pretty horrifying how things unfolded. Ted Farrow is a monster.

Game of the Year for sure. Maybe even Game of the current console generation.

  5. Phenomenal sales for a new IP, well done Guerilla!

    • Congrats man! I got it yesterday, I have to say that this was easily the best single player game I have played in a long, long time.

      Loved all of it.
If they don’t add to it via dlc or sequels, we should riot! :D
