The US Army has announced that its America’s Army: Proving Grounds free to play title will be releasing on PS4 this Summer. The original America’s Army was released almost 15 years ago and has been a way for the US Army to show the basics of combat through the medium of gaming. The free to play Proving Grounds version originally entered beta in 2013 before fully releasing in 2015 on PC, where it has accried 1.3 million players.
Matches will place teams of eight against each other, with players using equipment based on the real things the US Army uses.

What an abuse of the media of gaming! YUCK. Definitely not going anywhere near this, cr** like that should be banned from entertainment devices.

What makes this so bad in your eyes?
Andrewww
I think it’s a perversion of a game, because it is blatant war propaganda.
This is not just depicting war as something game-like, which many shooters do. The different intent is what makes this disgusting. It is not a fun shooter with the goal of entertainment, which happens to use a war scenario. It is the other way around: this is about the army, about war and about killing real people, and they use a game to make that look game-like and entertaining.
If they use games like that to recruit for the US Army, I’m not overly surprised that US Army members act and speak in real war settings with real people being slaughtered as if it was a game (see
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/apr/05/wikileaks-us-army-iraq-attack).
Tony Cawley
I find this a very odd point of view. The army of a vital public service that can often struggle to recruit and if they can use the popular medium of gaming to advertise and help with recruitment, what’s the problem?
parryman
I think the problem is dehumanising the enemy in a war situation is encouraging the use of inhumane actions against them.
colmshan1990
The US army is neither a vital public service (a country which has never been invaded largely thanks to two oceans) nor struggling to recruit.
Tuffcub
I think the problem is that this essential says “Hey, killing people is fun” – which all games do, but all games then don’t say “Hey, come and kill people for fun FOR REAL!”
Tony Cawley
Colm, congratulations, you’ve won the award for perhaps the most ridiculous comment I’ve ever seen on the intent.
The Lone Steven
That award current belongs to Donald Trumps Twitter account.
colmshan1990
Nah, seriously.
The US has the largest army, the largest air force and the largest navy in the world. All three. And it’s not even close- they spend more on defense than the next 9 countries combined.
Pretty sure they could make do without one of those and still be pretty safe. Especially given their geographical position.
It’s hardly vital. Israel’s army, now that’s vital to their safety. The US? They have a bit less to fear.
Tony Cawley
Don’t you think they have less to fear BECAUSE of their military might? Without it, don’t you think they’d be rather vulnerable?
colmshan1990
Take away the US Army, and the US Navy becomes the largest military in the world. And there’s also the air force. Three separate militaries.
And then there’s the CIA. The FBI. The NSA. Homeland Security. And all their weirdly militaristic police forces.
The US would still be pretty safe without the US Army.
Tony Cawley
So let me get this straight, what you’re saying is the USA don’t need a military because they’ve got a strong military? Is that right? That’s what you’re saying.
colmshan1990
The US Army is only one of the three major parts of the US military.
I’m saying you could easily take away the US Army part of it and still have by far the strongest military in the world, backed by the largest intelligence agencies in the world to boot.
Tony Cawley
Wow.
The Lone Steven
Bit of an odd decision and well, isn’t this what COD does? The miltary ‘MERICA FECK YEAH! aspect, i mean.
This just sounds medicore though erm…. actually, i won’t make a joke about the current political state of America and that if they added it as a mode sales would go through the roof.
Oh and *insert latest games are evil claim from teh daily rags here* because they will try to somehow link this with cancer/Chris EvansGear/anything else that is bad.
JR.
Interesting. It’s there for those to want to play it and can be ignored by those who don’t. Like every other game.
