Destiny 2 has managed to hold onto the top spot in the UK retail charts, despite the release of the first in a trio of major sim racing games, Project Cars 2. In fact, if you were to go off the physical charts alone, Project Cars 2 will have to be seen as a major flop, with its first weekend of sales a huge 74% lower than those of the original game, which sped into first place back in May 2015 and was a major success for Slightly Mad Studios.
However, as an acerbic GamesIndustry.biz points out, it’s not alone – Destiny 2 itself was down 50% compared to its predecessor, if we stick to this metric – and we’re simply not getting the whole picture with the increasing shift toward digital sales that are hidden from public view week in, week out. Digital sales are rapidly increasing, but we don’t know quite to what extent and not on a game-by-game basis.
Even so, dropping 74% doesn’t look too great for Project Cars 2, which is launching in a much busier time of year and facing stiffer competition. Even with digital sales, it seems unlikely that it’s reaching the heights of the first game.
