It’d be a real shame for one of the most popular games of the last few years not to make use of all the power inside the Xbox One X, and so it’s great to hear that Blizzard are hard at work on an update to bring 4K to the platform. It will mean that all of Activision Blizzard’s latest and greatest are making the most out of it, alongside Destiny 2’s forthcoming patch, Diablo 3 and Call of Duty WWII.
In a statement sent to Windows Central, Blizzard said:
Overwatch team is excited with great possibilities Xbox One X opens. The team is currently exploring how the game experience can be enhanced on this platform to leverage the console’s incredible hardware, and is working on implementing 4K resolution in the game on Xbox One X. It is very important for the team to make sure the user interface looks natural on a truly big screen. We will share more details about our plans for 4K support on Xbox One X later.
How Blizzard go about this will be very interesting, because the Overwatch update for PlayStation 4 Pro was decidedly less than comprehensive. While the game got a 4K HUD – really all the work has already been done for One X in that regard – Blizzard kept the actual game itself running at 1080p, using the extra power to stabilise the dynamic resolution and frame rate.
It does sound like Blizzard are going further than that for the One X, but it would be a real shame if this left the PS4 Pro in a strange no man’s land. Fingers crossed, Blizzard share the love and see fit to boost the Pro’s game resolution at the same time.
