Nothing interesting happened in the UK charts this week. It might have been the fact that nobody wanted to go or do anything because it was bloody cold, and so that meant that, with only one real retail release, nothing changed on the charts.
FIFA 18 is still on top, GTA V is still second and Call of Duty WWII is still third. You have to go all the way down to 42nd on the charts to find the new release of Gravel, a game whose name typifies the lethargy and lack of interest to be found in the chart you can view below.
However, this past weekend marked the Switch’s first anniversary, whereupon The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild debuted in second place. A year later and it’s hanging on in the charts, rising from 16th to 9th this week. In fact, the strength of the console can be seen in how three of the top ten are Switch exclusives – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey – and six of the top forty.

Age of Empires had a shocking launch. Although not surprising as it didn’t launch on Steam. I wonder how much that decision has cost them.

PC games very rarely factor in these charts, because the charts are retail only and the vast majority of PC games are sold digitally. On the Microsoft app store it’s listed as the best selling game, both free and paid.

How does FIFA sell so well year-round? Who is interested in it who doesn’t already have it by this point? It baffles me.

I would argue the fact that there are only switch exclusive games in the top twenty are because AAA games aren’t published on it – Monster Hunter, UFC, Fallout, AC: Origins, all those games are not on Switch cos it can’t handle them, so people with Switches are limited to games produced by Nintendo (and therefore exclusive) to get their AAA fix.

Well yes, but also people getting a Switch are people thinking that they want those games instead of Monster Hunter, AC: Oranges etc. etc.
