[UPDATE] Sega Megadrive Classics Announced For PS4, PC, And Xbox One

Sega have tweeted a video showing that Sega Genesis Classics, aka Sega Megadrive Classics on this side of the pond, is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. PC owners can already buy a number of Sega classic collections so this may be some of those repackaged rather than new games.

The trailer was posted by Sega on Twitter and then quickly deleted, probably as they announced it a tad early, but deleting the tweet was pointless as the internet had already made copies of the video. Games in the trailer include Sonic, Golden Axes, Space Harrier. Streets of Rage, Toejam & Earl, Shinobi, and (hurrah!) Altered Beast.

The trailer reveals the collection will launch on 29th May.

UPDATE: It’s be actually, officially announced now and – hurrrah – it contains more games than the PS3 collection, and online multiplayer! Here’s Sega’s Ibrahim Bhatti to explain.

You’ll be able to play the multiplayer titles like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, either on the couch with a friend, or online with anyone in the world. We’ve included graphic enhancement filters to make sure the old games still look great on your spangly, new-aged televisions along with an interactive 3D room UI, which means it’s super-easy to navigate your way to games in the collection from the virtual comfort of a 90s themed gamer’s bedroom!

  1. Unrelated but my girlfriend says yoga like Sega.

    • More importantly, what does she say Sega like?

    • “I’ve got a girlfriend!” – Alan Partridge

      • “She’s 14 years younger than me. Back of the net”

  2. Didn’t we already have this on the PS3??

  3. I’m holding out for the PS6/XB3 16K version.

  4. Yeah but they never include any of the good games like Jurassic Park, The Lion King, Disney’s Aladdin, Krusty’s Super Fun House & Robocop vs Terminator.

    • All those are licensed properties and Sega’s license agreement will have run out years ago.

      • I do believe he’s pulling your leg.

      • Galgomite, you’ll start rumours ;)

  5. Need a full game list before commenting. Gonna be disappointed if it’s exactly the same as the PS3 game though. Also, needs a Megadrive style controller for the full retro experience really. Playing old games on my mini SNES with a SNES controller was awesome.

    • You can very easily mod that to play Megadrive roms btw though, of course, you are limited to using the SNES controller still. Adding extra SNES games is ace though.

  6. Shocked/disappointed by the absence of a Switch version

    • Agreed. That was my first thought. This would be excellent on the Switch with save games and a suspend/resume function.

  7. Some new games included, but a few missing from PS3 edition. No Ecco the Dolphin games or Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles.

    • Yup I’m shocked those sonic games aren’t on! Think I’ll be keeping the PS3 version for a while yet.

    • Missing key titles like Sonic 3 and Knuckles is a massive turn off for me.
Especially with Sonic Mania coming out last year it would have been nice to play all the “proper” Sonic games in one place.
Anyway, I have bought this collection like three times already so it’s not like I can’t play most of these on something.
If you’ve not played these collections before they are great fun and miles better value for money than Nintendo would charge on Virtual Console.

  8. Why do they not include sonic 3 and S&K in these collections?

They did the same thing for the PS3 collection.

Wouldn’t mind a sonic collection including 4 and mania. Wishful thinking.

    • Sonic 3 and S&K were on the PS3 version! Which makes their omission from this version very strange.
