No Man’s Sky NEXT Update Will Bring Full Multiplayer In July

There was a lot of disappointment around No Man’s Sky’s release when it became clear that, while players share the vast procedurally generated universe and could name planets and creatures for other players to find, there wasn’t true synchronous multiplayer to let you actually share the experience.

The NEXT update will release on 24th July, coinciding with the game’s release on Xbox One – this is out on 27th July in Europe – and it will let players both team up with others to share the universe or occasionally bump into other players at random. Of course, this enables direct interactions such as combat, building bases with teammates to share as a kind of colony, and Hello  are adding in the ability to create race tracks for you to race exocraft on.

“Multiplayer completely changes the No Man’s Sky experience, it’s emergent, fun and intense in ways we always wanted it to be. I’m so happy this is finally happening” said Sean Murray, founder, Hello Games. “It is genuinely exciting to be able to fully realise the potential so many people could see in No Man’s Sky. This will be our biggest update yet and we’re pumped to be bringing Xbox players along on the journey with us now too.”

And here he is on Inside Xbox to talk about it:

  1. This game has been getting better and better with each new update and the addition of multiplayer should push it over the edge into being the game everyone thought they were getting in the first place. Definitely worth picking up in its current state and only going to get better.

  2. I’m delighted to see it roll out to a new audience on xbox. currently there’s all sorts of excitement and speculation about the NEXT update but presumably the mp aspect will all be opt-in so as not to interfere with the core solo experience that many of us appreciate.
