Here’s How Codemasters Have Recorded The Pace Notes For Dirt Rally 2.0

It’s quite funny seeing where Codemasters drew the line when capturing the new audio and timing of pace notes for Dirt Rally 2.0. They brought in legendary co-driver Phil Mills to lend his voice, the popped a racing helmet on his noggin, they gave him a clipboard with his notes, but then instead of putting him in a rally car, they sat him down in front of a computer screen!

To be fair, the way they’ve done it is ingenious, with an articulated seat that rumbles and bumps around as the tracks are being driven to add the right amount of shake, rattle and (if you’re driving really badly) roll to his voice. They’ve also recorded all the notes at three different tempos, to try and get the timing to feel just right, regardless of how accomplished a driver you are. That has been achieved by going through the tracks beforehand with Codies’ in house rally consultant Jon Armstrong.

It’s the same for other languages as well. Here’s German co-driver Tanja Geilhausen:

We went hands on with Dirt Rally 2.0 last month – catch our hands on impressions here – with the game set for release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in 2019.
