Just ahead of last night’s first Fallout 76 beta session, Bethesda released details on the game’s inherent PvP gameplay. It’s a mutant dog eat mutant dog world out there, so you need to be prepared and know the rules!
Essentially, anyone can attack anyone else at any time once you’ve hit level five in the game. Feel free to take pot shots, run up and stab, or shout mean things about someone’s mum (with a muted headset to avoid being reported for abuse). With this kind of unprovoked violence, whether dishing it out or receiving it, damage is reduced to enable someone who doesn’t really want to fight to get away or simply put up with it for a little while.
However, it can turn into a full on PvP duel should the attacked start to fight back. As soon as both players have attacked, you can deal full damage, you’re removed from each other’s maps and instead become dots on compasses. You’ll also get a notification showing who your attacker is and the Cap reward for winning the fight, which depends on your respective levels.
If you win, then great, but if you lose you’re given two options: seek revenge, or respawn. The former will spawn you nearby to try with PvP still active, while the latter lets you pick a respawn point and ends PvP.
Again, trying to stamp out outright trolling, you have the option to block another player outright or for the session, ending communication and making it more difficult for them to find you.
There’s another option for those who just want to fight, which is Hunter/Hunted Radio on the Pip-Boy. Once at least four players are in the queue, you’re each given a target to hunt down and assassinate within a one hour period. Kill them and you take on their target, and so on. Of course, while you’re hunting one person, there’s also someone hunting you. In a Battle Royale twist, the mode’s area will decrease in size to force players together.
While I’m not sure Fallout 76 is really the game that a lot of Fallout fans had in mind, there’s definitely some good ideas in there and lots of interesting ways that they’re looking to manage the lawlessness of the wasteland.
