UK Charts 19/11/18 – Spyro Reignited Trilogy Tops A Busy Week

After a few weeks without much competition, four major game releases (and a Fortnite bundle) took a tilt at Red Dead Redemption 2’s spot at the top of the chart. Given the grit of RDR2, it’s appropriate that two very family friendly games would depose the outlaw cowboy saga.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy has all the retro nostalgic appeal of Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, and so it’s no surprise to see it listed at the top of the charts. But is it the true number one? Pokémon games have always had twinned releases, leading to them being split in the UK chart tracking sector, and so while Let’s Go Pikachu debuted in fourth and Let’s Go Eevee came in sixth, combining the two would have bumped them to the top of the charts.

It led to a big push for Switch console sales as well, which in turn boosted other Switch games thanks to hardware bundles, but the opening week sales are down on the highs the series saw on 3DS – 60% down on Sun and Moon and 5% down on X and Y.

Things weren’t so rosy for the other new entrants this week. Fallout 76 debuted in third, but sales were down 82% on Fallout 4 – I wonder why? – and in tenth place, Hitman 2’s launch was down 90% on Hitman Absolution, which is the only real point of comparison when 2016’s Hitman was a digital only, episodic affair. In both cases, digital is likely to have made up a lot of ground, but for IO Interactive’s bald assassin, it’s not looking great.

With the weight of major games releasing over the last few weeks and months, it’s no real surprise that some are struggling. Game suggest that this could be people waiting to finish one game before moving onto the next, but you’d also have to say that this weekend’s Black Friday and the potential savings it offers is also a major factor in altering people’s buying habits. Battlefield V is out tomorrow, so next week’s charts will make very interesting viewing to see how it fared.

In the meantime, here’s the top 10:

I'm probably wearing toe shoes, and there's nothing you can do to stop me!

  1. Solid start for the Pokémon games. I wasn’t sure at first how they were going to sell but three of my mates and a couple of family members all picked up Switches this weekend alongside copies of Pokémon so clearly the franchise still appeals.

  2. Is Spyro currently only exclusive to PS? If so that’s darn good to have outsold every title on here.

    • Nope, multiformat.

    • I don’t think it’s out on the Switch (yet) for some reason?

Also, I read somewhere that 84% of (physical) sales were on PS4.

  3. Good to see Spyro at the top where it belongs. Started playing the first game at the weekend and it’s fantastic.

I wish they would remake all the PS1 classics this way. The first three Tomb Raiders, definitely. And the first three Resi Evils. Just update the visuals and keep the gameplay 100% as it was in the originals.
