We’re only a few days into 2019 but we already have our first hardware announcement of the year, and it’s not from a source you would expect. Slightly Mad Studios, developers of the Project CARS franchise, has announced a console called The Mad Box. The studio’s CEO Ian Bell revealed some details on Twitter then clarified extra in a discussion with Variety. Apparently designs of the console will be released in the next month.
What is the Mad Box? It's the most powerful console ever built… It's literally 'Mad'… You want 4k, you want VR at 60FPS? You want a full engine for free to develop your games on it? You have it.

Slightly Mad are aiming for 120 fps with the Mad Box and will allow for cross-platform development. There will be no exclusives with Slightly Mad preferring the console to be open to all developers. Slightly Mad are expecting the Mad Box to ship in around three years which, going by rumours, will be when the next generation of consoles from Microsoft and Sony will be in the hands of consumers. The Mad Box will also be supporting a wide array of VR headsets too. The studio has stated it has parties who are interested in funding the development of the console, but are still in talks.

It’s great news that there will be a British console again and I hope it does really well but at the specs they’re talking of it won’t be cheap. I don’t think ‘three years time’ is the best time to launch a new console, even if it is the beast promised, as it will be not long after the launch of PS5 and XB2.
