Doctor Who fans might be having to wait until 2020 for the next adventures to pop up on the telly, but her adventures are continuing in the more interactive realms of video games. Following on from the animated VR experience, The Runaway, a feature-length VR Doctor Who game is heading to various headsets this September.
Doctor Who: The Edge of Time will take players on an interactive adventure inspired by the show’s 55 years, but starring the latest incarnation of the Doctor, as played by Jodie Whittaker. You won’t be the Doctor yourself, but will have a lend of her Sonic Screwdriver to solve puzzles and battle the classic monsters as you try to find the Doctor and overcome a reality destroying threat. Of course, this means you’ll be facing off against the Daleks, but there’s new intergalactic menaces for you to defeat that have never been seen before.
Head of Digital Entertainment & Games for BBC Studios, Bradley Crooks said, “VR is the perfect home for a truly immersive Doctor Who adventure. Fans and newcomers alike will be able experience the universe of Doctor Who like never before, working with the Doctor and facing enemies new and old. Gaming is a key part of the future of Doctor Who and allows us to tell new and exciting stories beyond the TV screen.”
Marcus Moresby, Creative Director at Maze Theory added, “We are looking to give them an entirely new experience; an opportunity to team-up with the Doctor and feel like they are in the show. This of course includes piloting the TARDIS, a dream come true for fans!”
Developed by Maze Theory and published by PlayStack, Doctor Who: The Edge of Time will launch in September 2019 on all major high-end VR platforms, including PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, HTC VIVE and VIVE Cosmos.
