While most of the team at Double Fine is hard at work on Psychonauts 2, they’re a studio that likes to have a few things on the go at once. In 2019, that second project is RAD, a top down post-apocalyptic roguelite. The company have now pinned a 20th August release date on it, where it will be coming to PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

Double Fine’s portfolio is nice and varied because of their smaller teams and experimental nature. The last half decade alone has seen them spin Amnesia Fortnight prototypes into fully fledged game, remastered several classic LucasArts point and click adventure, and also spawned a few smaller titles like Headlander. RAD is coming from the Headlander team within Double Fine, spearheaded by Lee Petty.
Published by Bandai Namco, it drops you into a post-apocalyptic wasteland and asks you to survive the enemies that roam it with melee combat and mutant powers. It’s the radiation-based mutations that really put the rad into RAD. It could be bat-like wings, a snake head, flaming arm, acid feet and more.
While sure to have more than a few tastes of Double Fine flavour, it will be interesting to see just how well it can stand out from a packed roguelite genre. I guess we’ll find out in August!
