Mordhau update brings live lute music to the battlefield

On the surface, Mordhau is serious business. Inspired by games such as Mount & Blade, War of the Roses, and Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, it attempts to mix tense melee combat with multiplayer trappings you find in popular online shooters.

However, anyone who has actually played Mordhau will tell you otherwise. At times it’s incredibly goofy and lighthearted – something independent developer Triternion has leaned into more and more.

Before charging into battle, players can build and customise various loadouts using a swathe of options covering the many weapons and armour types Mordhau has to offer, as well as other equipment and cosmetic gear.

One item that quickly became a fan favourite was the lute, which has recently been buffed thanks to a recent update. While it still has no real practical use out on the battlefield (it’s mainly there for comic relief), modders have released a new version of LuteBot, making the medieval instrument more versatile than before.

The original LuteBot add-on allowed Mordhau players to import MIDI music files which the mod would then turn into a more thematic melody suiting the game’s dark age theme.

With LuteBot 2.0, however, the mod’s creators (who have the support and blessing of Triternion) have added a brilliant new features for those Mordhau players who are a little more musically minded. Installing the update will allow those with compatible MIDI instruments to actually play live music in-game.

Needless to say, the Mordhau community has had a lot of fun messing around with this inventive, easy to use tool for the recently released multiplayer game. Naturally, you’ll come across wannabe bards playing the theme tune from Game of Thrones among other, sillier tunes. Darude’s Sandstorm was inevitable, as was Smash Mouth’s “All Star”, and an impressive rendition of DragonForce’s “Through the Fire and the Flames” for all you Guitar Hero fans out there.

For full instructions on using the LuteBot 2.0 mod – its creators have post a comprehensive thread (see the source link below).

Mordhau is currently available for PC only. We hope to share some thoughts on the medieval combat sim in the near future.
