Ubisoft is going non-VR for VR multiplayer shooter Space Junkies, open beta starts tomorrow

Space Junkies was Ubisoft’s crack at a multiplayer VR shooter, featuring zero-G battling and an over-the-top presentation style. But now Ubisoft are ditching that requirement with a non-VR version of the game. This is going into open beta on PC tomorrow, 25th July, starting at 10AM BST and running until 7th August at 10AM BST.

Interestingly, Space Junkies will continue to feature cross-play multiplayer. Playable with mouse and keyboard on PC, you’ll be able to join matches both with VR and non-VR players, and VR is already cross-play between PSVR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

The game has a seasonal plan for post-launch content, with each season containing four episodes that last four weeks each. Through this, there’s already been a bunch of new game modes, characters, maps and weapons added since launch.

In May they added PlayStation Move and smooth motion support for PlayStation VR – something that many requested at launch – while the end of June saw the addition of a larger 3v3 multiplayer mode (2v2 was the original maximum), a bow and arrow weapon, and new close-medium ranged map The Jail.

It might be that this move was a reaction to lowering player counts in the game, with the hope that adding non-VR players can spur interest in the game, as was previously managed with Star Trek: Bridge Crew. However, it will bring fresh balance concerns, which were present at launch with the controller disparity between PC VR systems and PSVR (thankfully now fixed with the Move update). Depending on how the beta goes, it will be interesting to see whether or not the game then comes to regular PlayStation 4 and even Xbox One.
