Super Kirby Clash is a free-to-start multiplayer boss battler, and it’s out now for Nintendo Switch

One of the more unexpected and unusual announcements from last night’s Nintendo Direct was that of Super Kirby Clash. It’s a free-to-start title that was then also released shortly after the Direct concluded.

Super Kirby Clash is a multiplayer action game, with up to four players teaming up locally or online to battle against a string of tough bosses. Each player can choose from four different roles in battle, Blade Hero, Hammer Lord, Doctor Healmore and Beam Mage, and with further progressiono coming from upgrading armour, weapons and other gear. You then have more than 100 quests to take on to battle those bosses.

All told, the game looks pretty interesting, like a mixture of Kirby, Super Smash Bros. and Monster Hunter. Being free-to-start, there’s then microtransactions and mobile gaming elements. Gem Apples are earnt through completing battles or can be bought with real money, and this ties in with Vigor, which recharges over time and seems to be used to buy your way in to quests. Gem Apples can also unlock new quests or be traded for weapons, armour, support items and stickers. So hurrah for microtransactions, I guess?
