Shawn Layden unexpectedly leaves Sony

After 32 years in various roles Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden is to leave the company. The news was announced on the official PlayStation Twitter account.

It is with great emotion that we announce that Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden will be departing SIE. His visionary leadership will be greatly missed. We wish him success in future endeavors and are deeply grateful for his years of service. Thanks for everything, Shawn!

The departure seems quite sudden as no replacement has been announced for the now vacant post, usually a company as big as Sony would have someone lined up to fill a high profile role. Layden has made no comment on his departure via his official Twitter account.

Shaun has become a familiar face to PlayStation fans as he presented many key events including numerous E3 shows over the years. Under his watch the company produced a huge number of hits including The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, and The Last Guardian. He also set up PlayStation Productions, the new movie and television arm of the company that is currently working on the Uncharted movie and a TV series based on Twisted Metal.

We wish Shaun all the best with his new endeavours.

  1. Da f..k?!?

  2. On the one hand, with the PS5 just around the corner it makes sense to get new leadership in, but this announcement is certainly going to raise a few eyebrows.
