OPSM list The Last of Us Part 2 Online and Killzone Online as PS5 launch titles

The Official PlayStation Magazine Twitter account is either doing some seriously unprofessional trolling or they may have let a few cats out the bag. They have posted the survey below.

So lets go through that list one by one. Horizon Zero Dawn 2 is well underway at Guerrilla Games and as it has never been officially announced it is expected to be a PlayStation 5 game, something spectacular to show off the new console.

Actress Janina Gavankar, who played Tatai in The Frozen Wilds DLC, was at the Star Wars Celebration this year and talked to a cosplayer who was dressed as her character from Star Wars Battlefront 2. The conversation moved on to Horizon Zero Dawn and Janina exclaims “It’s incredible. Just wait ’til you see the sequel, you’re gonna die.I know some secrets, you’re gonna die.”

The Last of Us Part 2 launches in February 2020 but without the Factions multiplayer.

Here is a statement from Naughty Dog:

We wanted to address multiplayer in The Last of Us Part II. As we’ve stated, the single player campaign is by far and away the most ambitious project Naughty Dog has ever undertaken. Likewise, as development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us Part I, the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Last of Us Part II would not include an online mode.

However, you will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambitions, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II. When and where it will be realised is still to be determined. But rest assured, we are as big a fan of Factions as the rest of our community and are excited to share more when it’s ready.

So The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer is coming, but at a later date and Sony would be mad not to launch on PS5 as well, so that’s a another probable tick.

So to the big one, Killzone Online. We’ve not heard about that but could it be real? Well, indications are that yes, it could be. Guerrilla’s engine, Decima, is running on PS5 as it will be used for Horizon Zero Dawn 2, and for a good while the developer has been expanding from 250 employees to over 400. These new employees are working on a new multiplayer project which is being headed by Simon Larouche, who previously directed Rainbow Six Siege for Ubisoft. Job listings mentioned “matchmaking, tournaments, clans, and leaderboards.”

Killzone Online would be a great launch title, perhaps Sony would dabble in the waters of free-to-play games as that would mean everyone who buys a PlayStation 5 instantly gets something to play.

Finally we have Ghosts of Tsushima which we do know is launching on PS4, but there’s no reason and enhanced PS5 version could be in the works.

TLDR: All of the games listed do appear to be possible PS4 launch titles, and there is additional evidence that Killzone Online could be real.

Update: OPSM are trolling. They should have said “would you like to play” rather than “will you be playing” to avoid confusion. However, there’s still a good chance Killzone Online is still a thing due to the reasons above.

  1. So of those 4, that’s 2 games people won’t be buying next year when they’re released for the PS4 then? Why would you when there’s a PS5 version coming later in the year?

Of course, the PS5 will probably run the PS4 versions anyway. Maybe they’ll get a fancy PS5 update? Which won’t be as good as a native PS5 version, but saves you having to buy it again. And would “old PS4 games” really be something they want people playing when the PS5 launches?

I’ll join you in a small SQUEEEEEE for Killzone though. It only gets about 3 exclamation marks from me though.

    • None of those have been confirmed for release on PS4 before the PS5 launch. Chances are TLOU2 Online and Ghosts are Sony’s big titles for Xmas 2020 on PS4 so will release simultaneously on both consoles.

We know what Sony are up to until Feb/March. They usually drop one big game in the summer so that could be Ghosts, even if it is that only makes it a few months old.

      • Maybe they’ll be stupid, but TLOU2 Online has to be an extra mode coming to the main game, which is coming in February on the PS4. They couldn’t possibly think it’s a good idea to try and sell it separately, could they? After so long between the 2 games, to suddenly launch an online game within a year is going to look bad.

They might possibly offer a standalone version that doesn’t need the main game, I guess. But who’d buy that who doesn’t already own the main game?

Could they even offer it as DLC for the PS4 and a PS5 version with both the game and the online stuff bundled together?

Ghosts is an even worse situation for them if it launches in the summer, which does seem likely. Buy it now, or wait 3 months and buy the PS5 version?

The whole backwards compatibility thing is something Sony need to start talking about fairly early on. Otherwise it could hurt sales of anything released before the PS5 launch. Do you wait and buy a PS5 version? Or hope there’s an update to the PS4 version to run on the PS5? And if so, do you just wait a few months and buy the PS4 version when it’s cheap and has the PS5 update?

That’s assuming the PS5 does BC the way everyone assumes, while there’s some worrying rumours that Sony don’t even know how it’s going to work yet.

      • Pay attenion Yd!

TLLOU2 multiplayer has been spun off in to a separate game launching after the single player campaign. I would guess it will be offered free/discounted for those who own TLOU2, but it’s also going to be stand alone.

      • “When and where it will be realised is still to be determined.”

So possibly a standalone thing, possibly DLC, possibly PS5, probably PS4 as well.

They seem to have this weird idea that the MP in the first game was more than just a bolted on MP thing they had to do for whatever reason, and that people will desperately want more of it with the sequel. And won’t just want the single player story.

I still think they’ll do the Rockstar thing, release it later and if it’s a success, they’ll keep adding to it and sleep on a big pile of money. Does that cover the “The Last of Us Part II would not include an online mode” thing? Call it “The Last of Us Online” in the same way there’s GTA Online? Which could technically be claimed to not part of GTAV.

    • Why you think the mass market thinks and decides like you do, I don’t understand. Give yourself some credit.
The mass market won’t move to the PS5 within the the first year of its launch, and neither will they know about a PS5 version of a game they think they might like on their current console, the PS4.
