Rainbow Six Siege DDoS attacks have decreased massively, says Ubisoft

Ubisoft Montreal has confirmed that its strategies to combat a recent rise in Rainbow Six Siege DDoS attacks has been a major success.

In a recent developer blog, the studio announced that there has been a 93% drop in the frequency of DDoS/DoS attacks, issuing the following statement:

While this is a huge improvement, we are committed to continuing our work on strengthening the network infrastructure to prevent further attacks. We are also improving our automated monitoring that detects people initiating attacks to populate DDoS Ban Waves.

In response to the DDoS attacks, Ubisoft outlined a plan that included the aforementioned ban waves, as well as reducing the number of matches being allocated to each server. There was also an increase in traffic monitoring and in order to help those players affected by the issues, Ubisoft softened the penalty for leaving matches.

The DDoS attacks became more noticeable at the beginning of Siege’s latest in-game season. With the ranked leaderboards having reset, exploiters saw an opportunity to quickly climb the ladder by overloading servers and forcing their opponents to quit matches.

This ties in with last week’s news which saw Ubisoft file a lawsuit against MizuSoft, an online organisation selling cheats. In its lawsuit, the publisher cites that hackers have cost the company valuable time and resources by ramping up network monitoring and the need to fix potential vulnerabilities.

Currently we’re in Year 4 Season 3 (referred to as Y4S3) for Rainbow Six Siege with the next season just around the corner. If you log in today you’ll be able to take part in the Halloween themed “Doktor’s Curse” event and bag some time-limited cosmetic gear for your operators.

We’ll find out more about Y4S4 during the conclusion of this season’s Pro League Final which will take place next month in Tokoname, Japan.

What we know so far is that this next content drop will include two new operators (one from Kenya, the other from India) as well as a map rework for Theme Park.
