Job listing lets slip that Guerrilla Games are working on a Horizon Zero Dawn sequel

Considering that Horizon Zero Dawn was both a critical and commercial success, it should surprise absolutely no one that job listings posted by Guerrilla Games points to them working on a sequel to the open world robot hunting action game.

The post for a Technical Vegetation Artist reads, “Within Guerrilla, we have four teams dedicated to creating the stunning environments of Horizon. One team focuses on the creation of lush and stunning vegetation.”

It doesn’t take a huge leap to realise that this job listing is referring to a second game under the Horizon brand, though whether or not it would be called Horizon Zero Dawn 2, Horizon Second Dawn, or if it will feature a colon in the title is anyone’s guess at this time. One thing we can expect is that it’s going to have some seriously pretty foliage once more… so long as Guerrilla hire the right person for the job, that is.

It’s one of a clutch of job listings, including Senior Producer, Lead Game Designer, Senior Art Director and more, but it’s the only one that really mentions Horizon by name. The rest allude to pushing boundaries, broader landscapes that come alive with new NPCs and AI.

This comes after actress Janina Gavankar, who played Tatai in The Frozen Wilds DLC, let slip that she knows a good bit about the follow up while speaking to fans at Star Wars Celebration. “It’s incredible. Just wait ’til you see the sequel, you’re gonna die. I know some secrets, you’re gonna die,” she said. Not exactly keeping it on the down low!

So obviously, the next question to ponder is when a sequel might appear? It’s quite certain at this point that the game will not be a PlayStation 4 title, given that the PlayStation 5 is just a year away from release around Christmas 2020 and there’s still a brace of big PS4 exclusives lined up for early next year, but could a Horizon Zero Dawn sequel lead the PlayStation 5’s launch line up? With over three and a half years between Horizon Zero Dawn’s early 2017 release and the PlayStation 5 launch, it’s certainly a possibility.

Either way, don’t expect to really hear anything concrete about a game until some time in 2020, at the earliest alongside a full PlayStation 5 reveal in the opening few months of the year.
