Amazon Games unveil colonial era MMO New World – due out in May 2020

Amazon Games are stepping into the realms of massively multiplayer online gaming, with a fresh trailer for their upcoming game New World. Set in a fantasy colonial era, where supernatural forces tempt and corrupt humans and animals with the power, New World will be coming out for PC in May 2020.

Developed by Amazon Game Studios Orange County, New World takes players to Aeternum, the Eternal Isle. Having drawn people to it for centuries, twisting and controlling everyone lured there by the power, you find yourself following in those footsteps. You’ll play against rival players as well as the darkness of Aeternum itself and the undead that guard it, whether they’re Romans, Knights or your contemporaries.

Since being announced last year, the time period and the way that colonial powers stomped across the globe has meant some people view the game in a controversial light – the fact that America still celebrates Columbus Day is a sore point for many given his legacy led to the persecution of the indigenous peoples of the Americas – but Amazon are sidestepping this by trying to strip the game world of such a context. There’s no indigenous peoples, and you use magical abilities alongside gunpowder and flintlock rifles. Still, you do have certain holdovers from the Ancients that left their temples and monuments behind, as seen in a dev diary sneak peek.

The biggest set pieces in the game are fortress sieges against other players and invasions of the supernatural, with up to 100 players in an instance at once. You can form Companies with other players and fortify your stronghold together, or try to play alone and just deck out your own home. Either way, you’ll have a classless character system to explore, crafting to do and social elements to engage in or try to avoid.

The game is out in May, but eager beavers who pre-order the game will get access to a closed beta in April, as well as cosmetics that include Isabella’s amulet, the Fist Bump emote, a guild crest set, and the Expedition One unique title.
