Apologies for the clickbait headline but you honestly couldn’t make this up. Transformers Bumblebee director Travis Knight now has the honour of being the sixth director to leave the Uncharted movie. Yup, it’s back in development hell again.
It appears that Tom Holland Spider-Man schedule has clashed with the filming of the Uncharted movie and Uncharted has had to give way, meaning Travis will no longer be available to helm the film. “Sources said Sony still intends to move forward with the film with a new director and a new release date,” say Deadline.
The next Spider-Man film is scheduled to shoot next Summer which means Uncharted won’t be filming until at least late 2020 so it will definitely miss the December 2020 release date that it was assigned.
The film has been in development hell since 2008 when film producer Avi Arad and Columbia were making the film with David O. Russell directing. Mark Whalberg was to star as Nathan Drake with Robert De Niro as Nathan’s uncle. Russel dropped out and was replaced by Neil Burger in 2011 and a new script was commisioned. Augist 2012 saw Berger leave thr project and yet another re-write of the script, and in 2014 Seth Gordon became the director.
2015 saw Seth Gordon leave the project due to “creative differences” and 2016 saw yet another new script and Shawn Levy in the director’s chair. The script was finished in 2017 and Tom Holland was signed up to star as a young Nathan Drake, but then Rafe Judkins was brought in to rework the script. Again.
The end of 2018 saw Shawn Levy leave the project and 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg become the director and you can guess what happened, he left and was replaced by Travis Knight in September 2019.
The movie has been production for so long that original Nathan Drake, Mark Whalberg, is now being lined up to play the younger version of Sully.
At least we have Nathan Fillion’s fan film.
