Epic Games has refreshed the free game available on Epic Games Store, switching over from Darksiders Warmastered Edition, Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition, and Steep which were free until January 9th. The game on offer now is Sundered: Eldritch Edition, a hardcore metroidvania. I reviewed the game when it came out and wrote:
Sundered is a game that has all the ingredients to make a fantastic experience, but they haven’t been mixed together as well as they could have. The sense of progression can feel slow due to the grind of having to go through the same things over and over to improve Eshe, which becomes boring. The difficulty even on normal is really challenging too, exacerbating the repetitive nature of Sundered. Thunder Lotus have created an absolutely beautiful looking and sounding game, but get below that exterior and you’ll find an experience that is average at best.
You can read the full review here. Sundered will be available for free on the Epic Games Store until January 16th where it will then be switched out with Horace. In our Horace review Steve wrote:
Horace is one of the most pleasant gaming surprises in years. I’m clearly a key part of its target demographic, having lived through the 1980s and early 90s that so heavily influenced it, but my enjoyment and engagement went past such an identification. I was completely absorbed throughout, and fully intend to return to collect the remaining pieces of junk. It may not be as immediately impressive as the latest AAA blockbuster, but Horace is essential for fans of retro games or hard platformers and a real contender for Indie Game of the Year.
