If you love exploring strange worlds, building your own habitats, fighting monsters and hanging out with friends, chances are you’re a fan of the fine art of MMOs. Massively Multiplayer Online games remain one of gamings biggest time sinks, and Population Zero, created by Enplex Games, is about to ask for some of that time when it launches into Early Access on Steam this May.
It marks a big step for Population Zero, as the originally free-to-play title makes the leap to a paid distribution model. Enplex have stated that this is in an effort to eradicate ‘pay-to-win’ from the game, and that it was a decision reached alongside the community;
“The decision to change the monetization model from F2P to a one-time purchase has been made after a series of thorough discussions within the team and core community,” said Enplex Games Creative Director Denis Pozdnyakov. “The shift to B2P will allow the studio to continue the work on the game without fears of ‘pay to win’, as well as allowing us to release new game content that really enhances the gameplay.”
Population Zero is focussed on surviving the harsh environment of the planet Kepler, while its narrative and additional quests draw on classic sci-fi for inspiration. It’s a fantastic-looking game, and hopefully the move to a one-time payment will allow the developers to focus in on the game’s strengths.
It sounds as though Population Zero draws on the Rogue-like genre for some inspiration too – or maybe it’s Groundhog Day – as players will now have seven days to survive on Kepler before the planet becomes unliveable and their character’s DNA is irreversibly changed. The player’s aim is to construct a safe haven in that time, and through each cycle take the experience of their past lives while building up the necessary tools for survival and unravelling the mysteries of Kepler.
Population Zero sounds pretty unique in the MMO space, and with it’s classic sci-fi trappings is sure to gain a number of fans when it launches in early May.
