Some users are reporting that firmware 7.50 is getting their PS4’s stuck in a loop

A few days ago Sony rolled update Firmware 7.50 for PlayStation 4, a small patch that according to the notes did nothing more than the usual “improves system performance” schtick. Since then there have been a number of reports of the update breaking consoles, more specifically the get stuck in a loop when booting up.

“I’ve been upset all day trying to figure out what the hell this is because my PS4 has NEVER had a problem with updating until this update. I’ve tried every thing I could think of all the way up to factory resetting my PS4 and still have not managed to get the error to go away,” said one Reddit poster.

Other people are reporting that the update seems to stop the blu-ray drive from working, “I have this code as well – ps4 was working fine, kicked me out to do the update..tried to install but apparently my blue ray disc is not working and now I have a ps4 that wont connect online,” reads another post on Reddit.

Error codes SU-42118-6, which refers to a failed update, and CE-34788-0, which occurs when trying to update from USB have been reported. Unfortunately due to the current circumstances those with a non-working console have no way of getting it fixed.  A Reddit user contacted Sony to try and resolve the problem and received the following message.

To get this resolved you can visit our website https://support.playstation.com, also please be aware that the PlayStation repair facility is currently closed for US consumers. While we sympathize with our consumers, there is no estimate on when the repair facility will reopen.

If your PS4 is stuck you could try updating manually by downloading it from this link and then follow these instructions. Best to put the console in Safe Mode first, you can do that pressing and holding the power button for at least ten seconds.

We should mention that most people seem to have installed the update with no problems so this doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue.

  1. I had the beta installed for a few weeks with no problems, except when it was rest mode and there was a power cut. My Pro seemed to start okay but there was nothing on screen. I restarted in safe mode and all was fine. I don’t know if it was down to the update or not.

  2. There’s a fix if you’re on the Pro. Buy an Xbox One X.
