F1 2020’s first gameplay trailer has lots of very fast cars in it

Codemasters have dropped what they’re calling the first gameplay trailer for F1 2020, cutting quickly between various snippets of F1 action and blurred fast cars to the dramatic theme music of the Formula One championship. F1 2020 will be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC on 10th July this year.

It’s not actually the first time that we’ve seen the game in action though, with Codies having leant on a familiar formula for releasing gameplay videos by dropping Hot Lap videos and that go alongside the race weekends of the real F1 champsionship. Through that we’ve seen a first look at Zandvoort and Barcelona, which I’ve embedded below.

Arguably, in the wake of the disappointment over Microsoft’s Xbox Series X gameplay reveal stream, those two videos show off much more actual gameplay than the gameplay trailer!

None of these videos actually show off what’s new and interesting about the game, with Codemasters bringing a number of big additions to their familiar racing game formula. The biggest of these is the MyTeam mode, which lets you create a custom team to join the ten real teams currently found in the spot, and head up your own driver line up as you seek fame and glory on the race track.

The gameplay trailer does highlight one new tidbit though, which is that Formula 2 has been more thoroughly integrated into the full career mode, so you can race through a full, half or three-race challenge season in the junior formula before stepping up to the big time. The F2 2019 season will be represented in game at launch, with the 2020 season being added in a free update later this year.

This year is the first time that Lewis Hamilton can potentially match the record seven world championships of Michael Schumacher – you know, so long as there actually is a championship this year – and to mark that possible achievement, Codemasters have created a Michael Schumacher Deluxe Edition. This grants three days early access to the game, as well as adding the following four cars to the range of classics already available:

  • 1991: Jordan 191
  • 1994: Benetton B194
  • 1995: Benetton B195
  • 2000: Ferrari F1-2000

There’s also a Seventieth Anniversary ‘F1 2020: F1 Seventy Edition’, with another set of digital exclusive items, and a limited edition Steelbook release in certain markets.

Look at that. I did a whole thing about F1 2020 without mentioning that the whole sport’s been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic!

Oh…

Damn.

  1. This game could be the last to include Vettel, unless he decides to drive for a ‘smaller’ team.
