LittleBigPlanet spin-off Sackboy A Big Adventure is a 3D platforming spin-off, coming to PlayStation 5

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a new LittleBigPlanet spin-off game coming to PlayStation 5 from Sumo Digital, the developers of LittleBigPlanet 3. No release date has been announced, but given the gameplay on show, we’d expect it not too long into the PS5’s life.

After the weirdly furry initial tease, the game seems to rip Sackboy out of his triple plane 2D platforming of old and head into the realms of 3D platforming. There’s a definite Mario 3D World vibe to the game, with a more isometric view than you might expect.

There’s a big reason for that, of course. The camera needs to be wide enough to support full on four player co-op with players running in all sorts of directions. That’s a real staple of the LittleBigPlanet franchise, but it’s not clear if the game will retain the play, create, share ethos of the main series. Chances are this is a straight up platformer.

One thing is definitely clear, and that’s the added yarn-like fuzziness that our dear little chum now has on PlayStation 5.

LittleBigPlanet 3 was one of the earlier games from this generation, coming out in November 2014. It was the first home console game developed independently from series creator MediaMolecule, as they were still early in developing Dreams. Sumo Digital threw the kitchen sink at their solo effort, adding new sack-characters and expanding the possibilities on the creative side of the game.

I said in our LittleBigPlanet 3 review:

“LittleBigPlanet 3 is a quite major step forward for the series. The story might not explore all of the potential, but briefly shines a light on what the new possibilities might be for those making their own levels. The wide array of new tools, the removal of limitations and addition of new characters and power-ups will all serve to empower the community to reach new heights.””
