Marvel’s Avengers confirmed as PS5 & Xbox Series X launch title, with free upgrades from PS4 & Xbox One

Crystal Dynamics have announced that Marvel’s Avengers will be coming to both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and if you buy the current gen version, either digitally or on disc, you will be able to upgrade to the the next-gen versions free of charge (within a given console family.. They also confirmed the game will have cross-gen play so PS4 and PS5 players can team up, and Xbox One and Xbox Series X players can team up.

Digging into the PS5 version, the game will feature faster load times, boosted resolution and fidelity, improved texturing and armour destruction, ray tracing, and more. There will also be support for the DualSense haptics and spatial audio. Players will have a choice between an Enhanced Graphics Mode and High Frame Rate mode – which makes sense, considering Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider games and their excellent support for PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

That’s just for the PS5 version though, with Square promising more details about the Xbox Series X, Stadia and PC specific features in future. We’d expect very similar improvements and options on Series X.

Speaking on the PlayStation Blog, Gary Snethen, Chief Technology Officer at Crystal Dynamics, “PS5 greatly lifts the performance and graphics bar for consoles,” commented Gary Snethen, Chief Technology Officer at Crystal Dynamics. “The new GPU allows us to increase our texture resolution, push a higher level of detail farther from the player, enhance our ambient occlusion, improve our anisotropic filtering and add a variety of new graphics features such as stochastic screen-space reflections with contact-aware sharpening.”

“The GPU and CPU improvements on PS5 are exciting, but even more exciting is the introduction of an ultra-high speed SSD with lightning fast load speeds. This is a transformative improvement in consoles that will reduce load times down to one or two seconds and enable real-time streaming of massive worlds at ridiculously fast speeds,” he added.

“Without any optimization work, the loading and streaming of Marvel’s Avengers improved by an order of magnitude on PS5. When optimization is complete, loading content will be nearly instant, allowing players to seamlessly jump into missions anywhere in the game world. And as Iron Man flies through content-rich levels, higher resolution textures and mesh will stream in instantly, maintaining the highest possible quality all the way to the horizon.”

Gary also commented on the new 3D audio capabilities of the console and the DualSense controller, saying they have ” great ideas on ways to leverage these features.” The game will run at 60fps and 4K on PlayStation 5. By the way, the images above are all taken from the PS5 version.

Marvel’s Avengers launches on PS4, Xbox One, Stadia and PC on September 4th and will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X when those consoles launch a little closer to the end of the year.
