Marvel’s Avengers will have an open beta next month for PS4, Xbox One, and PC

We have known for a while that Marvel’s Avengers would be having a beta as it was confirmed by Crystal Dynamics. In previous announcements that beta has been linked to being a pre-order bonus, but now it has emerged you will not need to pre-order if you want beta access though you will have to be patient. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics confirmed the dates of when the three beta stages will take place, and how you will be able to access them. The first two stages will require pre-orders while the final beta weekend will not. The dates for each of these Marvel’s Avengers weekends are as follows.

  1. August 7th – PlayStation pre-Order beta
  2. August 14th – Xbox and PC pre-order beta, PlayStation open beta
  3. August 21st – Open beta for all platforms

It has been confirmed that on July 29th there will be another Avengers Wartable stream in which more details about the beta content will be given, as well as some surprises being revealed Crystal Dynamics about Marvel’s Avengers. Last month, there was confirmation that Marvel’s Avengers would be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X with a free upgrade path from the current gen as long as it is in the same console family. There was also confirmation that there would be cross-generational cross play meaning PS4 and PS5 players could team up, and Xbox One and Xbox Series X players could team up. When the next gen versions were confirmed Gary Snethen, Chief Technology Officer at Crystal Dynamics, said:

“PS5 greatly lifts the performance and graphics bar for consoles,” commented Gary Snethen, Chief Technology Officer at Crystal Dynamics. “The new GPU allows us to increase our texture resolution, push a higher level of detail farther from the player, enhance our ambient occlusion, improve our anisotropic filtering and add a variety of new graphics features such as stochastic screen-space reflections with contact-aware sharpening.”

“The GPU and CPU improvements on PS5 are exciting, but even more exciting is the introduction of an ultra-high speed SSD with lightning fast load speeds. This is a transformative improvement in consoles that will reduce load times down to one or two seconds and enable real-time streaming of massive worlds at ridiculously fast speeds,” he added.

“Without any optimization work, the loading and streaming of Marvel’s Avengers improved by an order of magnitude on PS5. When optimization is complete, loading content will be nearly instant, allowing players to seamlessly jump into missions anywhere in the game world. And as Iron Man flies through content-rich levels, higher resolution textures and mesh will stream in instantly, maintaining the highest possible quality all the way to the horizon.”

These enhancements are also expected on Xbox Series X and PC. Marvel’s Avengers launches on PS4, Xbox One, Stadia and PC on September 4th and will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X when those consoles launch a little closer to the end of the year.
